Selichot Facts

BY RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX

(Copyright, 1959, JTA, Inc.)

Why are the Selichot
prayers recited in the very
early hours of the morning?
The Selichot prayers are
penitential prayers which seek
to plead for the Almighty's for-
giveness. The Talmud (Abodah
Zarah 3a) relates that the last
three hours of the night (which
are the first three hours of the
morning) find the Almighty
closest to this world, while at
other times he is further re
moved. It is thus, in the wee
hours of the morning, in the
midst of the stillness of the
early dawn, that man finds him-
self closest to his Maker. It is
also stated that when the Pa-
triarch Abraham was c alled
upon for the supreme test, he
arose early in the morning.
When Moses prepared himself
to meet the Almighty at Sinai
he arose early in the morning.
It seemed, therefore, that the
early morning hours were the
periods when man can best
appeal to the Creator.
Why do some insist that
the Cantor who leads the
prayers during the Selichot
period and during the High
Holiday period be a married
man with a family?
This was the feeling of the
German pietists of the Medieval
period. It was felt that a man
who had to bear the cares and
problems of marriage and sup:
porting a family would better
appreciate the needs of the
populace which he led in
prayer than one who never had
faced these problems in life.
Why do some fast during
the week preceding Rosh
Hashanah?
An occasion when people
seek penitence is one which
calls for fasting. Thus, Selichot
period, being one of penitence,
is the occasion for f a s tin g.
Many would fast the first day
of the Selichot. Others would
fast as many as two or three
days in a row. Some make a
special practice of fasting the
day before Rosh Hashanah so
that the last day of the Hebrew
Year be spent in e x t r e m e
penitence to atone for the rest
of the days of the year which
were spent in sin. The general
idea was to use all of the pos-
sible means to humble a man's
soul in order to bring on the
spirit of penitence.
