Sir Anthony declared that UAR interference was "contrary to many international undertakings which have been given and is therefore not only the concern of Israel. Res- pect for engagements is indispensable to confidence among nations. In upholding this prin- ciple Israel deserves gratitude and support from all." Other messages were read from Sir Winston Churchill, Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd and Labor leader Herbert Morrison. The dinner was addressed by Viscount Kilmuir, the British Lord Chancellor; Emanuel Shinwell, former Labor War Minister, and Clement Davies, Liberal leader. They lauded Elath as a diplomat and as a man. Other speakers were Israel Sieff Barnett Janner, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, and Sir Simon Marks, who presided. Others who came to pay tribute to the departing envoy were Sir Frederick Hoy millar, permanent Under Secretary of State at the Foreign Office; Sir Roger Stevens, Under Secretary; Dr. Yeshayahu Foeder, governor to the Bank Leumi of Israel, and many Jewish and non-Jewish members of Parliament. President Hears Civil Rights Group Report • on 'Patterns of Prejudice' tee' in Housing By MILTON FRIEDMAN (Chief, JTA Washington Bureau) (Copyright, 1959, JTA, Inc.) WASHINGTON, (JTA)—The United States Commission on Civil Rights reported this week to President Eisenhower that a pattern of anti-Jewish prejudice in housing exists in practically the entire country. The commission declared "that the universal human phe- nomenom of ancient, unreason- ing prejudice is involved, and not necessarily prejudice based On color, is shown by the con- tinuing discrimination against Jews." The report said that Jews can, in most cases, get hous- ing that is "equivalent in quality" to that of other whites. But testimony was presented to the commission KEVIN McANDREiN announces the appointment of MOREY SCHOLNICK as one of exclusive saes agents KEVIN The remarkable — and practical PAKABLE a creation of America's most distinguished hatmaker. An outstanding fur felting achievement at a modest .. $15 that "in practically e v e r y large city in the • United States and in its suburbs there is discrimination against Jews in housing. In New York City, over a third of the 200 cooperative apartment houses were said to exclude Jews. The Westchester suburb of Bronxville was described as having achieved the status that "Hitler called `Judenrein'—free of Jews." In the nation's capital, there were said to be 14 areas in the District of Columbia and its environs from which Jews were excluded. It was clear from the re- port that the worst victim of housing bias was the Negro. Jews were unable to buy or rent' in some neighborhoods, but were able to find com- fortable and reasonably-priced housing elsewhere. The report termed housing "the one commodity on the American market that is not freely available on equal terms to everyone who can afford to pay." The report declared that "through its studies of three particular aspects of civil rights—voting, education, and housing—the commission has come to see the organic - na- ture of the problem as a whole. The problem is one of securing the full rights of citizenship to those AmeH- cans who are being denied in any degree that vital recog- nition of human dignity, the equal protection of the laws." It pointed out that "to a large extent this is now a racial problem. In the past there was widespread denial of equal opportunity and equal justice by reason of religion or national origin. Some dis- crimination against Jews re- mains, particularly in housing, and some recent immigrants undoubtedly still have to over- come prejudice. "But with a single exception the only denials of the right to vote that have come to the at- tention of the commission are by reason of race or color. This is also clearly the issue in public education. In hous- ing, too, it is primarily non- whites who lack equal oppor. tunity." 3 -- THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS — Friday, Sept. 1 8, 1 959 Anthony Eden Commends Israel for Striving for Rights in Suez Canal CERESNIE MINK STOLE sale For the woman of taste and discrimina- tion .. a wide se- lection of breathtak- ing mink stoles . . all beautifully styled and expertly made with the skill born of long experience.
