Lunts to Inaugurate
Theater Guild Year

Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fon-
tanne, two of the brightest
names in the American theater,
appeared in Detroit 30 years
ago during the initial season
that the Theater Guild estab-
lished its subscription program.
The Lunt-Fontanne tandem
will inaugurate the present
Theater Guild season, when
they appear beginning Oct. 12,
at the Cass Theater, in one of
their finest plays, "The Visit."
Other Theater Guild presen-
tations will be "The Music
Man," with Forrest Tucker and
Joan Weldon; "Goodbye, Char-
lie," a comedy starring Lauren
Bacall and Sydney Chaplin; "A
Mighty Man Is He," with Nancy
Kelly; "The Pleasure of His
Company," co-starring Cyril
Ritchard and Cornelia Otis Skin-
ner; and Basil Rathbone and
Michael Higgins in the Pulitzer
Prize drama, "J.B."

Our Letter Box

Additional Towns
of Biblical Origin

Editor, The Jewish News:
I have read with interest
your last "Purely Commentary"
column dealing with Hebraic
and Scriptural names on maps,
especially the map of the U.S.
and Canada.
I . am a philatelist of every-
thing pertaining to Israel, Ju-
daica and Biblical origin. Part
of my collection consists of en-
velopes with postal cancella-
tions of cities, towns, villages or
hamlets in the U.S. having Bib-
lical names. I must have over
200 such postal cancellations,
and I am sure that my collec-
tion is far from complete.
May I, therefore, offer some
sidelights on your Commentary.
It seems that there are more
towns bearing names of Biblical
locations in preference to Bib-
lical heroes. For instance: there
are towns by the name of Leba-
non in 20 states; Bethlehem ap-
pears in seven states; Bethel in
14 states. In addition, there is
a Bethel Island in California,
Bethel Park in Pennsylvania,
Bethel Ridge in Kentucky,
Bethel Springs in Tennessee,
and an East Bethel in Vermont.
Canaan is located in nine
states, with a Canaan Center
and an East Canaan; Carmel is
found in four states; Eden in
14, Hebron in 13; Goshen in 15
and only one Jerusalem iin
Arkansas.
Biblical heroes are not as
predominant. There is only one
town by the name of Aaron in
Kentucky, an Abraham in West
Virginia; a town named Big
Isaac, also in West Virginia;
Jacob is located in Illinois;
David in Kentucky and a David
City in Nebraska; and Joshua
in Texas. There is no town by
the name of Moses, though
there- is a Moses Lake in Wis-
consin and a Moses Point in
Alaska.
We have an Asher in Ken-
tucky and Oklahoma; a Benja-
min in Texas; a Dan in Ken-
tucky; Ephraim in Utah and
Wisconsin; a Gad in West Vir-
ginia; a Joseph in Oregon and
Utah; a Judah in Wisconsin; a

Levi in Kentucky_ and a Men-
ashe in Wisconsin.

I could go on, but it would be
too lengthy. It seems, however,
that most Biblical towns are in
the New England and mountain
states. The farther West one
goes, the less frequency of
towns named from the Bible.
As you mention, a more com-
plete study is in order and
would make interesting reading.
Whenever I come across an ad-
ditional city named after a Bib-
lical origin I have sent a self
addressed envelope to the post-
master of that town requesting
that the enclosed envelope be
pre-cancelled with the postmark
of that _town and returned to
me.
Due to your article, I may
have to start a new collection
of a similar nature for towns
with Biblical names located in
Canada, and possibly for those
in Central and South America.
