ST LOUIS, (JTA) —Former President Harry S. Truman ex- pressed his belief in the "glor- ious future" awaiting Israel and said that when he first ex- tended it recognition in 1948 "I was only expressing the sen- timents of the people of the United States." In a filmed address to the opening session of the 45th na- tional convention of Hadassah, attended by more than 2,500 delegates and guests, Truman urged that "we must striVe abroad as well as at home to defend human rights and to ex- pand the enjoyment of free- dom." He lashed out against hatred and bigotry and charac- terized as "our enemies" those who seek "to set group against group, faith against faith, to create prejudice and to spread hate and distrust among our people." Dr. Miriam K. Freund, na- tional president of Hadassah, announced that a freedom . bell to be erected atop the $25,000,000 Hadassah-Hebrew - University Medical Center at K i r y a t Hadassah will be named in honor of Truman. The convention adopted a $9,335,000 budget for the com- ing year to maintain the or- ganization's programs in the United States and Israel. It was reported that Hadassah chapters throughout the country have a membership totalling 318,000. Mrs. Freund was re-elected national president. President Eisenhower, in a message to . the convention, hailed Hadassah for "its pro- grams of welfare service and education" which, he said, "re- veal the vitality of its faithful membership." Premier David Ben-Gurion's message to the convention said that "great tasks still lie ahead" in the "rebuilding of our land and the refashioning of our people" which were made more difficult by the absence of peace and by the continued threat to Israel's security. Truman - told the convention that among the nations of the world were two great free gov- ernments, the United States and Israel, that will continue Separated by Nazis, Brothers, Sister to Meet after 30 Years Rev. Wolf Gold, of 25521 Gardner, Oak Park, has not seen his sister in 30 years and his brother since they were separated in Auschwitz concen- tration camp. He will realize a dream when they are reunited in Israel next week. In 1940 Rev. Gold and his wife Felina—a niece of Rabbi Joshua Sperka and the daughter of Chaim Sperka who was a well known Yiddish writer in Poland —were taken to Schtrockrod, one of the German work camps. Two years later he and his wife were separated and sent to Auschwitz. . During the entire period of the war, both were in Auschwitz but could not communicate with each other. Since no Jews re- mained in their native city, neither returned home at the end of the war. When at last they were re- united, through the intervention of Rabbi Sperka they were brought to this country and settled in Detroit. Rev. Gold became a schochet here with Feldman Bros. wholesale meat slaughtering firm where he has worked during the entire 11 years in this community. He is now president of the Shochtim union of Detroit. Wolf Gold last saw his brother in a snowy field outside of I POEN/ Auschwitz. Both were at work laying rails when Wolf, the older brother, collapsed. His brother carried him eight miles to a hospital. From that mo- ment, the two have not seen each other. The younger brother went to Israel, where he is now living in Ber Sheba. His sister, Zahava, married an Israeli in Poland 30 years ago. Rev. Gold has not seen her since. She now lives with her family on Keren Kayemeth St. in Jerusalem. Rev. Gold, his brother and sister were the only survivors in a family of 80. Israel Newspapers. Vie for Writings of Eban TEL AVIV—Former Ambas- sador Abba Eban is in great demand by Israeli newspapers who are competing for his jour- nalistic contributions. Since his arrival in Israel, the new Weizmann Institute President has been contributing articles twice weekly to the evening paper Ma'ariv and once a week to Davar. Yediot Aharonot, the other evening paper, is currently pub- lishing Eban's Memoirs. Eban's pre-election writings have created general interest in the Yishuv. the fight against totalitarian government. "T h e s e two governments stand for the belief that gov- ernments are organized for the benefit of the people whom they serve. The totalitarian gov- ernments or dictatorships stand for the belief that the peolpe are to be exploited by the dic- tator; They believe that the dictato r'..s whim is all that counts," he declared. Truman said that "it has never seemed to me that I deserved any special credit as an individual for what I did about Israel when I was Pres- ident of the United States. In recognizing the new State of Israel and giving careful con- sideration to its needs and its problems after 1948, I believe that I was only expressing the sentiments of the people of the United States regardless of political party or religious belief." Truman said that "I had faith in Israel before it was estab- lished. I have faith in it now. I believe it has a glorious future before it not -just as an- other soverign nation, but as an embodiment of the great ideals of our civilization." Confidence that the United Nations General Assembly, which opened in New York this week, will do "all in its power to see to it that Israel enjoys equal rights and privi- leges that other UN members enjoy in shipping and trade through the Suez" was ex- pressed to the delegates by Israel Foreign Minister Golda Meir. Scoring the United Arab Re- public for failure to live up to its obligations to keep the Suez Canal free as an international waterway, Mrs. Meir declared: "The canal should be free and open for all—and we think' we are part of that `all'." The Israeli Foreign Minister also expressed the hope that "friendly European govern- ments" will permit all Jews who wish to be reunited with their families to emigrate to Israel. Israel, she declared, is making preparations to receive an immigration of "large num- bers," adding that, while Israel needs large immigration, "large numbers of Jews need Israel." The only solution to the Arab refugee problem in the Middle East is the resettlement of the refugees in the lands where they now live, the convention was told by Mrs. Rose Halprin, former national president of Hadassah and acting chairman of the Jewish Agency execu- tive. "It is our hope," said Mrs. Keshenever Bessarabier Aid Society will celebrate the 11th Halprin ; "that - perhaps, some- anniversary of the State of Is- where in the Arab world, there rael with a banquet at 6:30 p.m. will be found leaders who, Sunday, at Turover Temple, knowing what they know, will 12129 Dexter. Mrs. Halprin pointed out that 50 per cent of the so-called Arab refugees "never saw Is-; rael, were not born there, did not come out of Israel." 19146 SCHAEFER Dr. Freund, speaking at the at 7 Mite same session, told delegates that there "must be no Zionist DI 1-2444 interference" in the political Quality, Experience, Service, structure of Israel.
