JERUSALEM — Construction
has been started on a 15-mile
section of the projected 16-inch
100-mile Elath-Beersheba pipe-
line which will replace the
existing eight-inch line it was
revealed Tuesday. The work is
being carried out by a recently
formed international company
headed by Baron Edmond De
Rothschild.
The eight inch line was
rushed to completion during the
1956 Sinai Campaign. The
Beersheba-Haifa pipeline built
afterwards is 16 inches.

IRVING I. KATZ

Jewish Archives
Honors I. I. Katz

Dr. Jacob R. Marcus, noted
Jewish historian, director of
the American Jewish Archives
of Hebrew Union College, this
week announced that Irving I.
Katz, executive secretary of
Temple Beth El and historiog-
rapher of the Jews of Michigan.
has been honored with the
establishment of the "Irving I.
Katz Collection on Michigan
Jewish History," at the Amer-
ican Jewish Archives. The col-
lection will also include many
items on general American
Jewish history.
Katz is the first executive
secretary of any Jewish con-
gregation in the country to be
so honored. The recognition
comes to him after more than
20 years of research and writ-
ing by him on the history of
the Jews in Michigan during
which time he unearthed thou-
sands of items on the history of
the Jews in Detroit and other
communities in Michigan. His
book, "The Beth El Story With
a History of the Jews in Michi-
gan Prior to 1850," published
by Wayne State University
Press, was widely acclaimed
and was the recipient of an
award.
Katz was recently elected
vice president of the Jewish
Historical Society of Michigan
and was named by the Jewish
Welfare Federation as chair-
man of exhibits for the forth-
coming 60th anniversary of the
United Charities. He was com-
missioned to prepare a chron-
ology of the history of Jewish
social service in Detroit for
the UJC anniversary to be ob-
served in December.

600,000 Israeli Children
Back in Their Schools

JERUSALEM, (JTA) —Some
600,000 children returned to
school Sept. 1 after the summer
vacations, with the threat of a
high school teachers' strike still
unresolved.
At issue was the government's
insistence on improving work-
ing conditions for the teachers
on the condition that any im-
provements would not be a
change in basic pay rates. The
government proposal, actually a
disguised pay increase, would
meet the high school teachers'
pay demands but would by-pass
the . present link between the
pay of high school and elemen-
tary school teachers. Under
present agreements, a rise for
one group automatically pro-
duces an increase for the' other.
Education officials disclosed
that enrollment in Arab schools
had increased by 4,000 this
school year, bringing the num-
ber of Arab students up to 36,-
000. Another 10,000 attend non-
government schools, such as
missions and other privately-
sponsored institutions. The num-
ber of qualified Arab teachers
also has increased, the officials
reported. They said that the re-
cent establishment of a new
Arab teachers seminary prom-
ised further progress.

It was al$o announced that
construction has been com-
pleted at Israel's Gulf of Akaba
Port Eilat of new port instal-
lations to make possible un-
loading of oil supertankers.
The first of the supertankers is
expected at Eilat in October.

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — Every
month the full moon shining
across waters of Biscayne Bay
brings a significant boost to a
Miami Beach restaurant with an
open terrace along the water's
edge. The moongazers, strange
as it may seem, are in all age
brackets.
