NEW YORK, (JTA) — S.
Ralph Lazrus, industrialist and
philanthropist, died last week
after a brief illness, at the age
of 61.
Lazrus was, for many years,
a member of the board and
the treasurer

of the Jew-
ish Telegra-
phic Agency,
and took an
active part in
its operations
during the cri-
tical pre-war
and war years.
He was a close
friend of the
late Prof. Al-
bert Einstein Lazrus
with whom he was associated
in a number of communal edu-
cational activities.
Lazrus was a trustee of the
Federation of Jewish Philan-
thropies of New York, a na-
tional board member of the
United Jewish Appeal since
1945 and vice chairman of the
UJA New York campaign from
1942 to 1949. He was chairman'
of the executive committee of
the Jewish Hospital of Brook-
lyn. He was one of the leaders
in the establishment of Bran-
deis University at Waltham,
Mass. In recent years he was
interested in the Chicago Medi-
cal School.
Lazrus, a native of New York
City, founded the Benrus Watch
Company with his two older
brothers in 1919 and was promi-
nent in the watch industry,
having served for 5 terms as
national president of the Amer-
ican Watch Association.
A keen student of interna-
tional affairs, he was one of
the organizers of the Overseas
News Agency established by the
late Herbert Bayard Swope,
William Allen White and Jacob
Landau in 1940 to report on
the basic developments of the
democratic fight against Nazism
and fascism. He also served on
the committee on foreign affairs
of the Democratic National
Committee's advisory council.

Hannah Harvith Dies;
Was Leader in Many
Women's Organizations

Hannah Harvith, 68, of 1001
Merton, for many years a leader
in Jewish women's organiza-
tions, died Wednesday. Funeral
services were held Thursday
afternoon at Kaufman Chapel.
Surviving her are her hus-
band, Jacob; two sons, Samuel
G. and Erwin; two sisters,
Minnie Goldfarb and Mamie
Cohen and five grandchildren.
, An organizer and a former
president of Zedakah Club,
Mrs. Harvith for many years
participated in charitable work
in Detroit. She was a founder
and a first president of the
Bnai Brith Women's Organiza-
tion, she held the post of
worthy matron of Purity Chap-
ter of Eastern Star, and was a
leader in the Ava Prenzlauer
Group and the Hebrew Baby
Day Nursery and was an organ-
izer of the women's committee
that campaigned here for a
Jewish hospital. She also was
active in Hadassah and the
Home for Aged.

Mrs. Newman, Former
NCJW Head, Dies

Mrs. Gladys Newman, former
president of the National Coun-
cil of Jewish Women, died in
Tampa, Fla., Sept. 1, at the age
of 71.
She was a native of Alma,
Mich., and came to Tampa from
Cleveland six years ago. She
was actively engaged in the
tobacco business. Her late hus-
band, Julian C. Newman, was
head of the IVI&N Cigar Manu-
facturing Co.
She was the mother of Mrs.
Elaine Rogan of Detroit and
is survived by another daughter,
Mrs. Helen Schanfarber of
Cleveland, and two sons, Stan-
ford and Millard.
Mrs. Newman was born in
Alma, Mich., and was brought
to Detroit when she was a year
old. She lived here until she
was 20. The late Rabbi Leo M.
Franklin officiated at her wed-
ding 50 years ago.
Her father, the late Max
Pollafsky, was a member of
the first confirmation class of
Detroit's Temple Beth El
which had three graduates.
Her grandfather was one of
the founders of the city of
Alma on a land grant from the
U. S. Government.

Dr. Sidney K. Beigler, 58, a
surgeon here since 1930 and a
member of the Harper and
Sinai Hospital staffs, died Sept.
5. Dr. Beigler, of 26637 York,
Huntington Woods, was a native
of Detroit.
A graduate of the University
of Michigan medical school, he
taught at the University of
Wisconsin and attended the
University of Berlin, Germany,
before beginning his practice in
Detroit.
Among his many affiliations
with various medical organiza-
tions, were the Wayne County
and Michigan medical societies,
American College of Surgeons,
Detroit Academy of Surgery
and Maimonides Medical
Society.
He is survived by his wife,
Elizabeth; two daughters, Mrs.
Joel Hepner and Mrs. Martin
Fine; three grandchildren, two
brothers and two sisters.

Louis (Lazer) Levin Dies;
Was Yeshiva Co-Founder

Louis (Lazer) Levin, founder
and co-owner of the Grand
River Lumber Co. and a co-
founder of Yeshiva Beth Ye-
huda, died Monday at the age
of 74.
Mr. Levi n, of 18901 Ken-
tucky, was a Detroit resident
for 55 years. He was born in
Lithuania.
A retiree since 1955, he was
a past president of Cong. Bnai
Israel, past vice president of
Cong. Mogan Abraham and a
member of Cong. Knesset Israel
of Miami Beach, and Mizrachi.
He is survived by a son
Reubin; three daughters, Mrs.
Morris Sukanic, Mrs. Harr y
Cohen and Mrs. Sidney Glick;
f a brother, Jack, of Chicago; a
sister, Mrs. Rose Alexbaum, of
Israel; six grandchildren and
