THE DETROIT JEWISH Chicago Jews Name Archbishop Sheil 'Man of the Year CHICAGO, (JTA) β€” The board of governors of the Chi- cago committee for Israel Bonds, unanimously voted the Most Rev. Bernard J. Sheil, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chicago, as the "Man of the Year" to be honored by the Jewish community for his leadership in humanitarian causes and his ardent support of the State of Israel. This will be the first time that a non-Jew and a high- ranking Church leader will be honored as "The Man of the Year" by the Jews of Chicago. Archbishop Sheil will be the guest of honor at the "Man of the Year" dinner which will be held in Chicago on Nov. 7, when more than 2,000 leaders of the Jewish community and outstanding civic and national figures will join in paying trib- ute to the church leader who is revered by all faiths for his outstanding achievements in religious and communal affairs. A long-time supporter of the establishment of the State of Israel, Archbishop Sheil has closely identified himself with the campaign for Israel bonds. He is not only a purchaser of Israel bonds, but last winter he took the initiative in invit- ing Jewish and non-Jewish leaders to a meeting at his residence w h e r e more than $500,000 in Israel bonds were sold. $100,000 Given L.A. Institutions to Aid Aged Nazi Victims LOS ANGELES, (JTA) β€” A home for the Jewish aged in this city and a Jewish center here have received $100,000 from funds- obtained for heir- less Jewish property in Ger- many by the Jewish Restitu- tion Successor Organization there. The money will be spent on two projects for the aged in which priority will be given to Nazi victims living in Los Angeles. United Help, Inc., a national agency providing special care for Nazi victims in the United States, received the $100,000 from the JRSO and turned aver the sum to the Jewish Club of 1933, an organization fo former German Jewish ref- ugees here. The , club, in turn, gave $80,000 to the Jewish Home for the Aged to provide a new residential facility to care for its senior members, and $20,000 to the Westside Jewish Community Center to create a senior adult day care center. The national agency turned the funds over to the club a f ter consultation with the Jewish Federation Council of Greater Los Angeles. MR. The school will be opened by the West Oak Lane Jewish Com- munity Center as part of its re- ligious school. The project has been developed in cooperation with the Philadelphia Associa- tion for Retarded Children. A Board of Education psychologist will be one of those in charge of the school's curriculum which will include preparation for Bar Mitzvah and confirmation. The Hon.
