Founder's Plaque Given to Krim by Israel Chamber of Commerce Arthur B. Krim, president of United Artists Corporation, was the recipient of a Founder's Plaque of the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Krim was cited by the American-Israel Trade Group for his efforts and enthusiastic support in promoting the economic relations between the two countries. The presentation was made in New York City by Nathan Straus III, president of the Chamber, and marked the election of Krim as a founding member of the American-Israel Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The interest of the American Motion Picture Industry in ties with Israel and the role of United Artists Corporation were evidenced by the announcement by Arthur Krim of plans to produce in Israel several major movie pictures, including "Exodus" and "The Glorious Brothers." Dr. Patai Proposes Reformation of Our Educational Philosophy in Light of Examples Set by the Bible Dr. Raphael Patai, director of research at the Theodor Herzl Institute in New York, has drawn upon patterns of life still in evidence in the Middle East, as well as upon Biblical sources, for his deep study, "Sex and Family in the Bible," which has been pub- lished by Doubleday. The eminent author, who has taught at a number of univer- sities, has drawn upon all avail- able sources in his work of research for this most reveal- _ ing book. Every aspect of fam- ily life, depicted in the Bible, is reviewed and examined and the results of the study form the completest compilation of Romanian, Authorities Free Rabbi Portogal TEL AVIV, (PTA) — Word was received here from Bucha- rest that the Romanian author- ities had released Rabbi Zisu Jacob Portogal, famed Roman- ian Jewish spiritual leader, and his son. They had been held for sev- eral months pending investiga- tion of charges that followed the aged rabbi's refusal to give up his attempts to locate and care for Romanian Jewish or- phans. Rabbi Portogal is known as the "Skulener Rebbe." No word was received as to the fate of others arrested at the same time, some of them because they assisted Rabbi Portogal. Rabbi Portogal had defied police orders to remain at home and cease traveling around the country in his res- cue efforts. (The Romanian legation in Washington confirmed that Rabbi Portogal had been re- leased. The Romanian author- ities are being asked to give Ribba Portogal an exit visa permitting him to leave Ro- mania and come to the United States to become spiritual leader of Cong. K'hal Adas Yereim in Brooklyn. (An American entry visa will be ready for Rabbi Portogal, it was learned, as soon as he has the necessary permission to leave Romania.) facts on sex in the Bible pub- lished until now. Dr. Patai views the Bible "against its contemporary back- ground." He examines the manifold problems related to sex and the family—marriages between relatives, romantic love, adultery, the Levirate, divorce, harlotry, homosexual- ity and scores of other prob- lems related to the subject of the book. He points out in the course of his study that "folk life in the 19th and 20th century Middle East is essentially com- parable to the life of the an- cient Hebrew as reflected in the Bible." Posing the question of the relevance of the book's discus- sion to modern times, Dr. Patai suggests that "the Biblical fam- ily pattern is superior to the modern one," and he proposes that some of the features of the Biblical f a m i l y pattern might be reintroduced into our lives and he asks "whether a reformulation of our e n t i r e educational philosophy in the light of the Biblical example would not be feasible." 20 Parties May Be on Israel's Election Roster in November Direct JTA Teletype Wire To The Jewish News TEL AVIV,—At least 20 political factions would present separate lists of candidates for the November elections to the Knesset, Supreme Court Justice Y. Sussman, chairman of the central election committee, pre- dicted Tuesday. There are 14 parties in the present Knesset. The election committee has already distributed applications requested by 40 parties and at least half of these are expected to produce the required 750 signatures before the deadline for filing lists in two weeks. Some friction has arisen among the factions of the na- tional religious front which combines the Mizrachi and the Hapoel Hamizrachi parties. The latter faction has demanded that their man be placed in the top position on the list, other- wise they threaten to enter a separate poster. The Progressives will start their list nominations after the return from Europe at the end of the week, of the party head, Minister of Justice Pinhas Rosen.
