Real Estate Board.
He added that the purchase
of an existing house is one of
the "m o s t satisfying trans-
actions that can be made" be-
cause "it generally can be
bought for substantially less
than a comparable new home
and can give you more for
your money in terms of living
satisfaction."
Points in favor of buying an
older house include, generally,
larger rooms, prior corrections
of defects in the original con-
struction and a location in an
established neighborhood with
completed streets, established
landscaping, close proximity to
schools and shops and freedom
from street and sewer assess-
ments.
Chamberlain suggested four
major ways of financing home
improvements:
Improvement loans insured
by the Federal Housing Ad-
ministration, limited to $3,500
for improving the "basic liv-
ability or utility of the prop-
erty"; uninsured loans offered
by loan associations and finance
companies; secured loans on
which collateral is pledged;
and loans added to an already-
existing mortgage.
