▪ Children's Leukemia Foundation Issues Plea for Blood An emergency request for blood by the Children's Leuke- mia Foundation has been issued by Earl F. Grant, chairman of the board. For the first time in seven years, lie said, blood re- placements have not kept pace with the demand. Up to now, he said, children afflicted with leukemia, hemo- phelia and other blood diseases have received transfusions free of charge, but now the Founda- tion's "Blood Bank is over- drawn." Grant cites the case of six- year-old James Gentilia, who is afflicted with a rare and incur- able blood disease: Mediterran- ean anemia. "Jimmy", who re- quires three pints every six weeks, is to undergo a serious operation which will help pro- long the period between blood transfusions. He has had almost 300 pints of blood during the six years of his life. Donations can be given to any Red Cross bloodmobile unit or at the American Red Cross Blood Center, 153 E. Elizabeth. Grant pointed out that Founda- tion volunteers should expressly state that donations are to be credited to the Children's Leu- kemia Foundation. Parolee' Status Given 11 Mexican Campers SAN FRANCISCO (JTA) — The United States immigration laws can be tempered with kind- ness and understanding, 11 Jew- ish youngsters from Mexico have learned. The children live in Tijuana, Lower California, and were in- vited to attend the summer day camp sponsored by the San Diego Jewish Community Center. According to the Jewish Com- munity Bulletin '.ere, which re- ported the episode, "it didn't take an act of Congress, only an agreement with the U.S. Im- migration and Naturalization Service of the Department of Justice." To comply with all the for- ni-lities, the paper said, the Immigration authorities sol- emnly gave the youngsters status as "parolees" on a mul- tiple entry basis. Danny Raskin's LISTENING ALFRED L. DEUTSCH Elect Alfred Deutsch to Board of State Savings League Alfred L. Deutsch, executive vice president of American Savings and Loan Association, was elected a director of the Michigan Savings and Loan League at its recent annual meeting in the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island. Deutsch stated that the con- sensus of opinion of Michigan's top savings executives was that savings and home mortgage loan volume will continue for the balance of the year at the same rapid pace set for the first six months of 1959. He predicted that if the pre- sent lending volume lives up to expectations, the nation's savings and loan industry will supply more than $14,000,000- 000 dollars for the financing of homes this year. Among the speakers who ad- dressed the meeting were Ger- ald R.. Ford, congressman of Michigan's 5th district, and C. R. Mitchell, president of the United States Savings and Loan League.
