THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS -- Friday, July 3 1, 1959 — 1 0 Israeli Veteran Pleads Guilty to Spy Charge TEL AVIV, (JTA) — A 28- year-old Israeli, who served in the Israel Army and later be- came a government official, was charged with espionage for an unnamed country, after confess- ing to police that he was engag- ed in spying for a foreign na- tion. Explaining that he did it for family reasons, the Israeli, who is married and has a child two months old, indicated that, un- able to bring his parents to Israel under the "reunion of families" scheme, he contacted a foreign legation here and pro- posed his services on condition that his parents would be per- mitted to emigrate to Israel from the country which the le- gation represents. Neither_ the name of the ar- rested man, nor the name of the country for which he worked was disclosed. The defendant came to Israel eight years ago. He studied elec- tronics in the country from which he emigrated. Upon ar- riving in Israel, he joined the Israel Army. Later he became a government official. . He said that he started his contacts with the foreign lega- tion in 1956 on his own initi- ative. He has been known by his neighbors as a quiet, friend- ly person and a good father and husband. (JTA)—An 18-year-old youth who professes the idology of Adolf Hitler and boasts of his hatred of the _Jews, was being held this week on arson charges in con- nection with the fire which destroyed paintings valued at $50,000 in the Columbus Mu- seum of Arts and Crafts. The walls of the museum and of two Columbus syna- gogues were smeared with Nazi swastikas in ink, charcoal and yellow paint. Columbus police identified the arrested suspect as Rich- ard Smith, also known as Rich- ard Renka, who moved here recently from Atlanta. Chief of Police E. F. Mon- crieff said the youth admitted setting the fire and smearing the swastikas on the walls of the edifices. The youth was booked on arson charges. Immediately after the crime, the City of Columbus posted a $1,000 reward for the appre- hension of the culprits. Gov . Ernest Vandiver of Georgia, terming the vandalism a "de- mented act," added $500. Denmark Forms WJC Unit; to Join Stockholm Conclave NEW YORK, (JTA) — The establishment of a section of the World Jewish Congress in Denmark by eight communal bodies there was reported here by Dr. Isaac Schwartzbart, di- rector of the WJC's organiza- tion department. This allows Danish Jewry to appoint a delegate to the forth- coming plenary assembly of the WJC in Stockholm. There are in Denmark at present about 6,500 Jews, of whom 99 percent re- side in Copenhagen. The com- munity has an official status recognized by a governmental decree of 1814.
