Throw Light on Holy Land History
Under the unrevealing title
of "The Goodly Heritage," Avra-
ham Yaari has collected a ser-
ies of episodes in the Holy Land
which emerge of great historic
significance.
The subtitle of this impor-
tant book, which was abridged
and translated by Israel Schen,
is more revealing. It is: "Mem-
oirs describing the life of the
Jewish community of Eretz
Yisrael from the 17th to the
20th centuries."
This significant book was
published by the Youth and
Hechalutz Department of the
World Zionist Organization, in
Jerusalem. It is an adaptation
of Yaari's "Zikhronot Eretz Yis-
rael, it runs into close to 500
pages but is a condensation
from the 1,200 pages of the
original Hebrew.
The enisodes in this volume
cover many periods. They
date back to medieval Pales-
tine, when the Jews suffered
under a tyrant from whom
they finally found relief.
They take the reader through
many experiences involving
Jewish settlers as well as
communities which survived
in Palestine for many gener-
ations.
There are childhood reminis-
cences of Jerusalem and recol-
lections of colonization experi-
ments as a result of which the
foundations were laid for pres-
ent-day Israel.
There is the story of the
early settlement of Petach
Tikva, its abandonment and
eventual restoration. "How the
Vine Came to Rishon" is an
interesting account of the Rish-
on Latzion settlement. A chap-
ter is devoted to the Biluists-
and their pioneering efforts.
An account is given of the
revival of Hebrew speech in
Jerusalem in 1881, under the
leadership of Eliezer Ben-
Yehudah (Perlman).
Scores of pioneering ventures
are described in this book, and
the translator has shown good
judgment in retaining the his-
torically significant portions of
the Hebrew volume.
The events of the First World
War, the beginnings of Tel
Aviv, the visit of Herzl in
Eretz Yisrael, the Zion Mule
Corps in the fight for the liber-
ation of Palestine and many
other accounts are included in
the volume.
A very interesting item is
the brief account of the activi-
ties in Palestine of the great
friend of the Zionist cause,
the Christian missionary Dr.
Otis Alan Glazebrook, who
was sent to Jerusalem by
President Wilson who named
him U.S. Consul. He was a
man who had faith in the
future of Jewry.
The defenders of the Yishub
at Tel Chai and Kfar Giladi
come in for deserved glory. A
concluding chapter, "The Dawn
of a New Era," paid tribute to
the activities of the Keren Kaye-
meth LeYisrael, the Jewish Na-
tional Fund.
"The Goodly Heritage" is a
very good book. It enriches the
Zionist library and is indispen-
sible for a full knowledge of
the history of the Holy Land.
