Book Enthusiasts
Take Pride in
`The Bookplate'

Betrothal. Revealed
at Family Dinner

Since the invention of print-
ing, the bookplate has become
the mark of the real book
enthusiast. At first pasted
only in gift volumes, it later
became popular in private.
libraries. The earliest known
Jewish bookplate dates from
the 18th century, when Isaac
Mendez used the initials "I.M.
and a quote from Ecclesiastes
2:13: "I saw that wisdom ex-
ceedeth folly, so far as light
excelleth darkness."

The Apocrypha

The general name "Apocry-
pha" was given to a certain
type of literature which consti-
tutes writings that resemble
the style of the Scriptures of
the Bible, and yet are not con-
sidered Biblical texts in the
sense of being sacred. They are
generally believed to have been
written during the period of the
Second Commonwealth. The
term "Apocrypha" means "hid-
den." They were named "hid-
den" texts because they were
either hidden away for contain-
ing secret esoteric statements,
or hidden away so that they
would not be used like open
Biblical texts, or hidden away
until the coming of the Messiah
who would testify as to their
validity. Jewish sources refer-
red to them as "Seforim Chitz-
onim" meaning "outside books"
since they were to be consid-
ered "outside" of the Bible.
Other religions accepted
them, translated them and pre-
served them in Greek, Latin,
Ethiopic or Slavic version s.
Since the Jews discarded them
and forbade their official usage.
the original Hebrew versions of
almost all of them are lost and
all we have are mostly trans-
lations of the original Hebrew
or Aramaic version. Some of
the contents texts are found
either quoted or contained in
Rabbinic literature.

Everything Was Planned So
Nothing Could Go Wrong ... But .

Four youngsters had big
plans for next week, but fate—
in triplicate—ruled otherwise.
The youngsters were to leave
Monday morning for the Blairs-
town, New Jersey camp oper-
ated by the Detroit Link of
the Order of the Golden Chain.
Their chaperon, Mrs. Esther
Horowitz, associate matron of
Detroit Link, was all set to
take the youngsters on the
plane trip—the first for most
of them — then accompany
them on a sightseeing tour
of New York plus dinner and
trimmings.
But she was cheated of the
opportunity. And so was Mrs.
Esther Kozin, junior past
matron, who was to bring the
children home after their stay

Hitti's 'Syria' Is
Anti-Israel Book

Lebanese-born Philip K. Hitti,
who was educated at the Uni-
versity of Beirut and Columbia
University, who came to this
country in 1913 and became a
naturalized citizen in 1920, has
been a professor at Columbia,
Princeton and Harvard, teach-
ing Oriental history. He now
is Professor Emeritus of Semitic
Language at Princeton.
For many years, he has been
in the forefront among pro-
Arab propagandists and his
position is anti-Israel. His new-
est book, "Syria—A Short His-
tory," a condensation of his

It is when he deals with Zion-

soms. He speaks of Zionism as
a problem that "had grown out
of its narrow dimensions and
assumed international import-
ance." He declares that within
Syria the feeling against Zion-

There is a biased description
of the action of the United Na-
