Facsimiles of Genizah Manuscripts
Published by Prof. Abraham Katsh
Facsimiles 3f Genizah manu-
scripts of the Bible, Mishnah,
Talmud, Midrashim, Halakhah
and liturgical texts, compiled
and identified by Prof. Abra-
ham I. Katsh. chairman of the
department of Hebrew culture
and curator of the Library of
Hebraica and Judaica at New
York University, are incorpo-
rated in a single volume, en-
titled "Ginze Russiyah."
These are part of the valuable
manuscripts which were micro-
filmed in Russia by Prof.
Katsh. The Genizah documents
were located by the American
scholar in the Antonin Cairo
Genizah Collection in Lenin-
grad. Their value is explained
in a scholarly introduction to
this volume.
"The word Genizah is de-
rived from the Hebrew ganaz,
meaning to 'hide' or 'store up,' "
it is explained by Prof. Katsh,
who quotes at length on the
subject from Prof. Solomon
Schechter who first discovered
"the priceless treasures" in
Cairo in 1896.
Prof. Katsh relates: "Prior to
Dr. Schechter's trip to Egypt,

Cairo was visited by Jacob Sa-
phir in 1864, by E. N. Adler
in 1888 and 1896 and by Abra-
ham Firkovitch in 1865. As a
result of Firkovitch's travels,
the public library in Lenin-
grad possesses choice material
of the Genizah literature. Abra-
ham Firkovitch (1785-1874)
came from the Crimean Penin-
sula and, in his zeal to prove
that the Karaites were descend-
ants of the ten lost tribes of
Israel and had settled in the
Crimea in the 6th century
B.C.E., travelled to Cairo, Pal-
estine, and Constantinople and
succeeded in bringing together
the largest collection of He-
brew, Samaritan, and early Ka-
raitic manuscripts in the world.
Part of his collection was pur-
chased by the Leningrad Pub-
lic Library in 1867 and the
second Firkovitch collection
was acquired by the Leningrad
Library in 1876 after his
death . . .
". . . The Leningrad Public
Library also houses the An-
tonin collection which consists
of about 1200 fragments of the
Cairo Genizah. They were
brought together by Antonin :
a Russian Archimandrite who
lived in Jerusalem. Except for
a few privileged scholars, the
Russian collections have been
inaccessible to the Western
scholars."
Prof. Katsh was one of the
privileged scholars. He was in
Russia in 1956 and 1958 to-
gether with Prof. Christian 0.
Arndt and microfilmed 5,000
"items of rare manuscripts in
the Moscow Library and in the
Library of the Priental Insti-
tute of the Academy of Science
of Leningrad and in the Lenin-
grad Public Library."
In the Lenin Library in Mos-
cow, he examined the Baron
David Guenzberg Collection of
Lexicography, Judaeo-A rabic
and Aramaic commentaries.
He incorporated them in a vol-
ume, "Catalogue of Hebrew
Manuscripts Preserved in the
USSR." The present volume,
"Genizah Russiyah," contains
the Genizah manuscripts. A
third volume of microfilmed
manuscripts is in preparation.
A series of indices explains
the hundreds of illustrations of
microfilmed material in this
book.

Livonia Becomes `The Mighty Ones': of Great People
New Outpost of in the Old Testament Days
Meindert DeJong has written ua, Deborah, Gideon, Samson,
Hebrew Schools a most
interesting book of the Samuel, Saul and David.
The furthermost western
branch of the United Hebrew
Schools system will open in
Livonia this September, a fur-
ther step in what president
Mandell Berman calls "the long
established policy of the UHS
to move with the Jewish popula-
tion wherever it moves!'
The new school will be oper-
ated with the cooperation of
the Livonia Jewish Congrega-
tion in the headquarters of the
synagogue at 7 Mile Rd. and
Osmus. -
Norman Ruttenberg, who has
served as a Hebrew school prin-
cipal for almost 20 years, will
be principal of the Livonia
branch, open to all members of
the Livonia Jewish community.
Children living in the area,
from the age of 7 1/2, will be ac-
cepted for enrollment. Trans-
portation to the Hebrew school
will be provided by the United
Hebrew Schools transportation
fleet. Since school starts im-
mediately after Labor Day, par-
ents have been asked to enroll
their children early.
Further information may be
obtained by calling the United
Hebrew Schools, DI 1-3407.

deavors to provide Hebrew
school facilities in all new areas
where the Jewish community

Jerome Friedman, president

great men and women in Bible
days, under the title "The
Mighty Ones," and the splendid
pictures by Harvey Schmidt add
greatly to the attractiveness of
this appealing work, published
by Harper (49 E. 33rd, N. Y.
16).
The puzzling thing is, how-
ever, that the author has used
as a focal point for his book a
quotation from the New Testa-
ment, from Hebrew 11: "Now
faith is the substance of things
hoped for, the evidence of
things not seen." Arranged from
Hebrew 11 also is this arrange-
ment: "The Lord is my helper,
I will not fear what man shall
do unto me."
Except for this Christological
note, the volume adheres to Old
Testament narration. It starts
with creation—"In the Begin-
ning—Man." The other parts of
the book are headed "A New
Beginning of Man," "The Be.
ginning of a Nation" and "A
Land for a Nation."
The chief characters in the
Bible story are included in the
book—Adam and Eve, Cain and
Abel, Noah, the Patriarchs and
their families, Moses and Josh-
Request Delay on Bill
Until Pre-Slaughter
Methods Are Studied
TRENTON, N. J., (JTA) —
Spokesmen for New Jersey Jew-
ish organizations urged the
State Legislature to defer action
on a pending humane slaughter
bill until completion of current
scientific studies of methods of
pre-slaughter handling of ani-
mals.
The spokesmen appeared here
at a public hearing on the bill
by the Assembly's committee on
agriculture. The committee had
reported the bill out to the
Assembly once before, but it
had been returned to committee
with instructions to hold public
hearings.
Spokesmen for the organiza-
tions_ noted that Jewish tradi-
tion and practice have required
humane treatment of animals
since ancient times and that the
act of Jewish ritual slaughter
has been recognized as humane
in the proposed Assembly bill.
They, nevertheless, recom-
mended that no legislation be
adopted at this time pending
completion of scientific studies
now in process to determine the
most humane method of han-
dling animals prior to slaugh-
ter.
Such a study is being spon-
sored by the Joint Advisory
Committee of the Synagogue
Council of America and the
National Community Relations
Advisory Council.
It concludes with David's vic-
tory over Goliath and the peace
he helped bring to Israel.
It is an excellently written
book and a very well told story.
The Old Testament tales emerge
from it in a glorified light, made
possible by the skill of a bril-
liant writer.

In ceremonies on the campus
of the Jerusalem university,
"The Charles Charcowsky

tion of his "munificence and

His recently formed philan-
thropic Charcowsky Foundation
provided the award from a fund
in excess of $600,000.
Charcowsky, who lives in the
Bronx, came to this country as
an immigrant house painter and
paper hanger and gradually
became an important figure in
the wholesale and retail paint
industry.
