Secretary of State, dealt with

Allegations about U.S. voters

policy toward Palestine charac-
terized Bevin's fight against
Jewish aspirations. His deroga
tory references to the American
Jewish community and Presi-
dent Truman caused the White
House to describe the Bevin
'outbursts as "unfortunate and
misleading."
Byrnes also served on the
U.S. Supreme Court and as Gov-

widely respected in the South.
