THE DETROIT JEWISH N EWS — Friday, July 10, 1959 - 16 WSU Grad Continues Scholastic Tradition of Spanish Ancestry A National Defense Graduate Fellowship to Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learn- ing has been awarded to Henry Toledano, 28-year-old June grad- uate of Wayne State University. Toledano, of 3244 Fullerton, will receive a three-year stipend of $4,800 for the study of com- parative religions. The history and Semitics major will begin in September on the U. S. Health, Welfare and Educa- tion Department grant. This month, he will return home for a visit with his family in Meknes, Morocco, where he lived until 1949 when he came to the United States to attend the New York Yeshiva Uni- versity. Descended from a long line of Spanish rabbis, who left Europe in 1492, Toledano re- ceived a rabbinical degree from Detroit Yeshivath Chachmey Lublin in 1953. He is to grad- uate from the Midrasha this summer, after four years of study and teaching in the United Hebrew Schools. The son of a late Yeshiva rabbi of Meknes, Toledano hopes to teach on a university level. He also was awarded, re- cently, the Wayne State Univer- sity Adele Mondry Semitics award. Scholarship is apparently habit with his family, including eight sisters and four brothers. Toledano's family includes One brother, 17, attends L'Ecole Normale de Paris, another is active in the African national- ist- movement, and a sister works at the American embassy. Toledano said that his Span- ish ancestors, called "negora- shim," Hebrew for "escaped ones," were traced through a Moroccan Jewish custom which requires a marrying couple to include in the marriage con- tract records of the family tree. When one of his sisters mar- ried, Toledano said, they found a family heritage dating back to a Castilian rabbi. I Sngagements In announcing the engage- ment of Renee Badner to Leon- ard H.
