Foster Parents

Foster parents of the Jewish
Family and Children's Service
were honored by the agency
and representatives of the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation at a
birthday luncheon last week.
The .occasion also marked the
first meeting of the JFCS
board, at which Milford R. Pre-
gerson was re-elected president,
along with Max M. Shaye, vice-
president; Mrs. Victor Shiff-
man, treasurer; and Harold
- Silver, secre-
tary and di-
rector.
The pro-
gram was
filmed and
shown on
Tuesday
morning on
Rita Bell'S
television
show on
WXYZ-TV.
Isidore So-
beloff, execu-
Pregerson tive vice-pres-
ident of the Federation, paid
tribute to the foster parents,
and Mrs. Theodore Bargman,
past president of JFCS, pre-
sented a huge birthday cake
which was accepted by Mrs.
Alex Goldberg, president of the
parents group.
Introduced to the gathering
were two Detroit women who
have been foster parents for a
total of 46 years. They were
Mrs. John Farkas, a 30-year
foster mother, and Mrs. Charles
Harris, a foster parent for 16
years.
Foster home needs in the
community were served through
the organization, in 1929, of the
Jewish Child Placement Bu-
reau, which merged in 1941
with the Jewish Children's
Home to form the Jewish Chil-
dren's Bureau.
The present JFCS child
placement department has been
in existence since 1944 follow-
ing the merger of the JCB with
the Jewish Social Service Bu-
reau, the former name of JFCS.
The JFCS is a community
agency supported by funds
from the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign and the UCS.
