Abba Hushi Called
'World's Best Mayor

By

NATHAN ZIPRIN

The arrival of Mayor Abba
Hushi, • of Haifa, on behalf of
the Israel bond campaign, is
particularly timely now as we
celebrate the Shavuot holiday.
Shavuot is a harvest festival
and Haifa has traditionally
been celebrating its harvest hol-
iday with a . mammoth flower
show that .attracts the lovers
of beauty from all of Israel.
Abba - Hushi has become a
kind of symbol of the love of
beauty and cleanliness in Is-
rael. Perhaps it is in part due
to the beauty of Haifa itself,
sitting on the slopes of Mt.
Carmel next to the ocean. -
But it is more than this. It is
Abba Hushi's pertinaciousness
itself that has made Haifa a
synonym throughout Israel for
cleanliness. Israel is full of
stories on this score. According
to one story the colorful Haifa
mayor gets up at cock's crow
and rides through the streets of
ths. city to make sure they are
clean, and when he see some-
one littering the streets he
stops his jeep and so rebukes
the culprit that the offender
thereafter would sooner sever
his right arm than drop a piece
of paper on the streets.
Abba Eban once called Mayor
Hushi "the world's best mayor."
There is something unique in
the relationship between Hushi
and Haifa. No one remembers
when Hushi was not its mayor
and, naturally enough, it is uni-
versally expected that he will
continue to be the city's mayor
forever. That of course is just
assumed in the natural order
of things.
Hushi is nationally known in
Israel, but seemingly he has
dedicated himself to this one
job — being mayor of Haifa.
One is reminded of the quip
attributed to the late Jimmy
Walker of New York City.
