A review of significant trends in the life of Israel, with special reference to medi- cal problems, is presented in the 32nd anniversary issue of the Hebrew Medical Journal edited by Dr. Moses Einhorn, of New York. In dealing with Israel's health chart, Dr. Einhorn points at the dramatic improvement in the incidence of infectious diseases which plagued the State at the height of mass immigration between 1949- 1951. , the steady improvement in the incidence of tubercu- losis, syphilis and infantile paralysis, as well as the higher incidence of coronary diseases among Israelis born in Europe and America as compared with those born is Asia and Africa. There is a multiplicity of organizations in charge of hos- pitals ranging from the Gov- ernment of Israel to the Gen- eral Sick Fund, Malben, Ha- dassah, and to those under private ownership. But there is also in evidence consider- able collaboration and team work between the various au- thorities. Female mental patients out- number males. The percentage of mental patients born in East- ern Europe is larger than that of any other group (44 per cent). - Native born Israelis, who constitute a third of the gen- eral population, comprise only 15.2 per cent of the mental cases. Moreover, those who have settled in Israel since 1949, constitute a large ma- jority of schizophrenia and manic depressive cases. The author relates these phenome- na to the Nazi upheaval. Tribute is paid to the Israel Health Insurance System which is based on a voluntary and cooperative basis. The General Workers Sick Fund affiliated with the Histadrut, had a mem- bership of 250,012, including dependents, in 1946. In 1957 membership rose to 1,183,750, a figure which covers more than half of the entire popula- tion. Smaller sick funds are also in operation. This issue of the Hebrew Medical Journal contains also a report on the demography of the Israel physicians by H. S. Halevi, assistant director general of the Ministry of Health. Israel has the high- est ratio of physicians in the world: one physician per 446 inhabitants. There is a marked shortage of young doctors. The propor- tion of middle-aged and elderly physicians is high. About 25 per cent of Israeli doctors are women' The section "Medicine and Religion" presents a revealing study on the attitude of Jew- ish Law towards human pain by Dr Immanuel Jacobovits, the former Chief Rabbi of Ireland. The Cairo-born Chris- tian dignitary is the spiritual head of the 20,000 Christian Arabs in Israel.
