Moscow Claims Soviet
Jews in Israel Want
to Return to Russia

WASHINGTON (JTA) — A
letter allegedly signed by 107
former Russian citizens now
living, in Israel, complaining
about "bitter" conditions in
Israel and asking help to re-
turn to Russia, has been pub-
lished in a Moscow newspaper
in one of the sharpest attacks
on Israel to appear in the Soviet
press, it was reported here.
The letter appeared in the
(labor newspaper Trud, as an
appeal to Marshall Kliment Y.
Voroshilov, Soviet Chief of
State, with charges that the
writers had been "deceived"
into going to Israel "through
lying Zionist propaganda." Pub-
lication of the letter was con-
sidered here a move by Soviet
authorities to counter a state-
ment made by officials in Israel
to the New York Times that
there were almost no Russian
Jews in Israel who want to
return to the Soviet Union.

Fire Chief Joseph Adler to Retire; Plan Party whi Tuefisedfl

Although it won't be official station. He was the envy of all swiftly —

until June 30, Chief Joseph Ad-
ler has worked his last day for
the Detroit Fire Department.
Tuesday marked the close of
a career which spanned 41 years
as an active fire fighter and
brought Adler a distinction no
other Jew can claim—chief of
an entire city's fire department.
The 58-year-old fire chief on
Wednesday began a furlough,
which will continue through
June 30, the day when he is
retired as head of the depart-
ment.
Actually, under department
regulations, the Fire Chief must
retire when he reaches 60 years
of age. But it is certainly no
secret now that Chief Adler fal-
sified his age when he entered
the department.
While he has filed a correc-
tion of his birth date and given
proof of his correct legal age,
Adler must abide by his original
declaration and leave two years
short of the official retirement
age.
Several parties are being
planned for the retiring chief,
including a department cele-
bration at 6 p.m., Tuesday, at
the Belle Isle Casino. Friends
outside the department can
make reservations with Lt.
Deneweth, WO 3-2100.
What prompted young Joe
Adler to join the Fire Depart-
ment 41 years ago was every
boy's childhood ambition—to be
a fireman. Only Joe Adler lived
a little closer to firemen and
fire stations than most young
fellows.
Born in Cleveland, he spent
most of his boyhood in Chicago
— in an apartment across the
street from a fire station.
Young Joe would run errands
for the firemen, getting them
sandwiches, cigarettes and cans
of beer. (He says the latter is
strictly, forbidden nowadays).
On March 19, 1912, Joe Ad-
ler, 11, found himself alone in
Chicago. His father had been
shot to death by a gang of hood-
lums. For several years he
knocked around between De-
troit, Chicago and Montreal,
working in a garment factory,
a a helper on a horse-driven
express wagon and as a street
car conductor.
In 1915, still too young to
work for the fire department,
Adler lived in a Chicago fire

passed the democratic ruled as-
