THE HAGUE (JTA) — The International Court of
Justice ruled it had no competence to deal with Israel's
claim for damages against Bulgaria in the shooting down
of an El Al airliner in 1955 with a loss of all 58 lives
aboard.
England, Australia and China voted in favor of the
4: Court's jurisdiction, but 12 nations voted against. The
\ruling was based on agreement with the initial prelimin-
tr; ary objection of Bulgaria that a declaration accepting
compulsory jurisdiction of the court in 1921 could not
[=:, be considered as constituting compulsory jurisdiction
now. Bulgaria argued she was not a member of the
United Nations when the El Al plane was shot down and,
therefore, not subject to international court decisions.

Strauss Issue

Direct JTA Teletype Wire

WASHINGTON — President
Eisenhower Wednesday termed
it "tragic" if the issue of anti-
Semitism was being brought
forward in connection with the
nomination of Adm. Lewis L.
Strauss as Secretary of Com-
merce.
At his weekly press confer-
ence, the President was asked
by a correspondent how he
felt about charges made Tues-
day by Republican members
of Congress that anti-Semitism
might be involved in the oppo-
sition to the confirmation of
Strauss' nomination.
The President answered that
he did not know that this
charge had been made by Re-
publicans; however, the Presi-
dent said that "if this issue is
brought forward seriously it
will be indeed tragic."
At the same time, President
Eisenhower again expressed
high praise for his nominee.
calling Strauss "most dedicated
and able" and the "highest type
of public servant."

This label tells you the whole story:

It
says the beans inside the can are Heinz Vegetarian
Beans. Meaning, of course, the best-tasting beans
in all the land! The label also says these beans are
strictly Kosher—because it carries the 4 seal of
approval of THE UNION OF ORTHODOX JEWISH
CONGREGATIONS OF AMERICA. About all it
doesn't say is—"how about some... tonight?"
Well how about it?
