Dag Awaits Data on Arab Flights

UNITED NATIONS (JTA)-
There have been many recent
overflights by Israel and Arab
airplanes over the airspace of
both sides, Secretary General
Dag Hammarskjold declared
here this week.
Asked specifically about the
latest incident involving Israeli
jet fighters forcing down a Leb-
anese plane carrying United
Nations Emergency Force sol-
diers for a vacation in Beirut,
Hammarskjold replied:
"I have no complete details
in regard to the recent story

about the UNEF troops on their
way to Beirut. Overflights have
been fairly frequent by both
sides, although the number of
Israel overflights far outnum-
ber the Arab overflights."
Commenting later on Ham-
marskjold's assertion that there
have been more Israeli over-
flights, a spokesman for the Is-
rael overflights, a spokesman
for the Israel Mission at the
United Nations said:
"As the Israel-Egyptian Ar-
mistice Agreement had been
violated by Egypt, and conse-

quently Israelis not taking part
in the Israel-Egypt Mixed Ar-
mistice Commission, no com-
plaints by Israel against the
rumerous Egyptian overflights
were submitted, and the statis-
tical picture must, therefore,
of necessity, be quite incom-
plete.
"However, the numerous
Egyptian air incursions deep
into Israel territory were, for
the last year, the subject of re-
peated Israel approaches, both
with the Commander-in-Chief of
the United Nations Emergency
Force and at United Nations
Headquarters in New York."

Find Fresh Water in Area of Elath

Direct JTA Teletype Wire
To The Jewish News

JERUSALEM — Fresh water
was discovered recently in an
area north of Elath under
shallow granite layers in a
section previously considered
arid.
The report was attributed to
Menahem Bader, director gen-
eral of the Development Min-
istry, and the development was
considered of utmost impor-
tance to the Negev, particularly
Elath, the booming port city.
It was reported that an Amer-
ican Jew, N. C. Mendelson, had

been responsible for the dis-
covery. Mendelson is reported
here to •have made a fortune
after the discovery of water
on some wasteland he owned
in California by German-born
hydrologist Stefan Reiss. Men-
delson sent Reiss to Israel. He
found a spot for drilling which
was done by local crews.
Samples of the water were sub-
jected to laboratory analysis
and disclosure of the find was
approved after the tests indi-
cated the water- was satisfac-
tory.
