Local Violinist Goes into Second Round of Brussels Competition Joseph Silverstein, prominent in the community as a violinist, was one of 24 who are going into the second round in an in- vitational Brussels competition for the Queen Elizabeth Prize and a tap award of $3,000. The competition for violinists is held every four years under t h e patronage of Belgium's Queen Mother Elizabeth. Only three Americans came through the first round in the contest. Silverstein, 27, has appeared several times with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and in re- citals here. He received his early training in Detroit, later studying with Efrem Zimbalist. He is the son of the late Ber- nard Silverstein, who was an orchestra instructor at Central High School here. Pogrebishtchers Disband; Funds Go to Charities Pogrebishtcher Progressive Society of Detroit announces the dissolution of its organiza- tion. Naftali Zack, who has served as the group's president for 15 years, said that the group had served its purpose with the growth of a new generation and was therefore disbanding. The society's funds were distributed to educational and charitable organizations, with 5500 going to Yeshivath Beth Yehudah, 5500 to the Jewish Home for the Aged, $500 to Israeli or- ganizations and $200 to the He- brew Benevolent Society. Officers of the group at the time it dissolved were Zack, president; Hyman Unatin, vice- president; Abraham Turbow, treasurer; and Fritz Hoffman, secretary.
