THE DETROIT JEWISH NEW S — Friday, May 15, 19 59- 14 The Suburban Community `Now Hear This' Is So-So, But SOCettes Are Sock() By the Oak-Woodser Costuming, sets, scenery and SOCettes. Those were the main ingredi- ents of "Now Hear This," the seventh annual production of the South Oakland County Chap- ter of Hadassah, which was staged before over 5,000 last Saturday and Sunday nights at Ford Auditorium. For the second year in a row, it was the 16 girls who comprise the SOCettes (and all but five are new this year) that made the show really worthwhile entertainment. The girls were given tre- mendous and well-deserved ovations for each of their appearances—in the "Great Day" number, which put the show off to a fast start; a Calypso bit that showed real imagination and in the finale, where they appeared with the rest of the cast of 80 plus men and women. There were other bright spots, to be sure, but the main criticism of the overall show was that it was too long and was dulled by repetitions, meant to be "cuties," that dragged out the plot unnec- cessarily. The original story — with music parodied from a variety of sources—was certainly topi- cal. It revolves around the open- ing of the S-O-C Way, a take- off, of course, on the St. Law- rence Seaway project that just opened this month.
