We Salute Israel's 11th Anniversary

Israel's friends note with pride the young State's growth in the
eleven years of its existence. . . . Its Jewish population has trebled
since 1948, the growth attesting to the freedom that has been earned
there by more than 1,250,000 newcomers from lands of oppression.
. . . The country's cultivated area has increased from 412,000 acres
to 993,750 acres. . . . Irrigation has quadrupled and is now provided
for 275,000 acres of inhabited land. . . . Afforestation also has quad-
rupled through the Jewish National Fund from 13,000 planted acres
to 53,000 acres. . . . Exports have grown eight-fold from $29,680,000 in
1949 to $232,000,000, while imports have doubled from $253,120,000
to $430,000,000. . . . Shipping has quadrupled from 10 vessels in 1948
to 36 vessels and tonnage has increased fifteen-fold, from 14,000 to

193,000. . . . The elementary school attendance has quadrupled from
108,844 to 444,443, teachers have quadrupled from 5,964 to 21,193,
while the Arab school attendance in Israel has increased six-fold, from
6,780 to 37,573. . . . These are just a few of the figures that point to
Israel's progress. . . . The young State's friends in this country,
conscious of the important role it plays in advancing democracy's cause
in the Middle East, pay homage to its builders and defenders . . .
Detroit JeWry, whose celebration of Israel's eleventh anniversary will
take place at Ford Auditorium Tuesday evening, joins in saluting the
Israelis and to extend to them best wishes for continuing progress and
speedy attainment of peace.

State Dept. Assures
Restoration of Grant
Assistance to Israel

By MILTON FRIEDMAN
Washington Correspondent of JTA and Jewish News

WASHINGTON—C. Douglas Dillon, Un-
derieCretary of State for Economic Affairs, has
indicated to the Senate Foreign Relations Com-
mittee that the State Department would prob-
ably reinstate grant aid for Israel, but made it
clear that the Department would be acting
b e c a u s e of "psychological" considerations
rather than economic reasons.

--

The Dillon statements on the grant issue
were revealed Wednesday when the Senate
Committee made available the record of Dil-
lon's latest testimony at a hearing previously
designated as secret.
Dillon said that "from an economic point
of view, strictly the point of view of economics,
we can do for the State of Israel everything
that we feel is required by economics under
the Development Loan Fund and Public Law
480 (surplus food sales) and grant program
and an addition is not strictly necessary."

Detroit's Allied Jewish Campaign definitely will have another $5,000,00 fund-
raising year when the current solicitations are completed, 400 volunteer workers
were informed at the dinner meeting that officially closed the drive, Monday eve-
ning, in the new Jewish center.
Adhering to a tradition established at campaign meetings, the drive's re-
sults were summarized in a concluding address by Isidore Sobeloff, executive vice-
president of the Jewish Welfare Federation, who called it "a happy moment" to .be
able to report that, as of Monday evening, $4,754,000 in ..r..13-dges~ had already been..
turned in, and that the large number of prospects yet to be seen assured the Over
subscription of last year's income, thus assuring a $5,000,000-plus campaign for
1959.
At this time last year, Sobeloff poin ted . out, he had reported an income of
$4,513,000 and had expressed confidence that "$300,000 mor' was in transit."'
The 1958 drive finally was boosted to a total of $4.950;000. On that basis, he said,
this year's drive will go above the $5,000,000 mark, "providing us with a great
performance of which we can be proud."
All campaign leaders at Monday's meeting pledged that they would continue
their work until all prospects had been reached.
Irwin I Cohn, campaign chairman, presided at the dinner and called attention
to the fact that it was the first major community event to be held in the new
building. He emphasized that the campaign, which officially opened on March 23,
closes "only officially" with that evening's dinner meeting, but that the work goes
on until every Jewish family in Detroit is represented with a gift.
Cohn paused to pay tribute to the memory of one of the community's out-
standing leaders, Sidney Allen, who died last month, and the audience joined in
the tribute by standing for a minute in silence.
In one of the major addresses of the evening, Max M. Fisher, president of
the Jewish Welfare Federation, called the event "an evening of celebration," and
he expressed appreciation to Irwin I. Cohn, the campaign chairman; Leonard N.
Simons, the associate chairman; Paul Zuckerman, chairman of pre-campaign activi-
ties, and the other leaders and the army of workers in this year's drive.
Zuckerman stated in his report that 85 per cent of the campaign income

new Jewish Center, Monday eve-
ning. Reports on the campaign's
progress were submitted by of-
ficers of the drive, who indicated
that the $5,000,000 mark will be
attained when the balance of the
prospects are reached during the
coming two weeks. Participants in
Monday's meetings included, in
