May 1, 1959 Only a Week-End Left for Real Action Detroit's 1959 Allied Jewish Cam- paign comes to a close on Monday evening, at the dinner meeting to be addressed by one of world Jewry's most distinguished leaders, Dr. Abba Hillel Silver. The event assumes great signifi- cance. It will be elevated to a high de- gree by the appearance of a great orator and a brilliant interpreter of Jewish life — the eminent guest speaker — and will symbolize the effectiveness of the current drive for more than 50 important causes, overseas, national and local, including aid to Israel and support of all our im- portant local agencies. Only a week-end remains for the hundreds of capaign workers to complete the great humanitarian task 'of aiding the needy, of resettling the dispossessed, of assuring uninterrupted support for De- troit's aged and ailing and our commun- ity schools. Much is yet to be attained during the remaining few days of the campaign. Many- contributors are yet to be seen, some who have given must increase their first gifts and an unfinished job must be assured of success. It is urgent that those who have not been approached by volunteer solicitors should send in their pledges to the office of the Allied Jewish Campaign and that the workers should devote the coming few days to making the drive a success. We must remember, as the 1959 drive draws to a close, that all of us, jointly, form our community, and that no one should separate himself from the community if there is to be a loyalty to traditions and to human obligations. Time is of the essence, and great causes call upon us not to squander the days and the energies needed for the attainment of a great goal. Let us make every minute count during this week- end, so that the 1959 Allied Jewish Cam- paign may truly emerge successful. Runes Exposes Anti-Semitic Diatribes of Karl Marx Karl Marx's comments on the "Jewish question" have been kept out of many of his published works. The anti-Semitic rant- ings of Karl Marx have been available to readers in Soviet Russia, but not to the English readers. For the first time, the unexpurgated anti-Jewish comments - by Marx now are available in a translation from the original Ger- man in "A World Without Jews," published by Philosophical Library (15 E. 40th, N. Y. 16). An introduction by Dagobert D. Dr. Solomon Grayzel and the JPS The 71st annual meeting of the Jewish Publication Society of America will be marked by recognition to be accorded Dr. Solomon Grayzel, on the occasion of his completion of 20 years of service as the society's editor. This honor,. to a very able scholar, is worthy of note by the entire American Jewish - community and, indeed, by all English-speaking Jewries which have benefited from the JPS services. Only three other editors preceded Dr. Grayzel—Miss Henrietta Szold, the founder of Hadassah, who, in 1893, be- came the JPS editor and translated the monumental "History of the Jews" by Heinrich Graetz for publication by the society; Dr. Benzion Halper, who served from 1916 to 1924, and Prof. Isaac Husik, who was the editor from 1924 to 1939. Since 1939, under the guidance of Dr. Grayzel, the JPS has witnessed phenomenal. groWth. A number of out- standing classics have been published in Optimistic Mid-East Evidences of Peace In spite of the extention of Arab plans for the continuation of the eco- nomic boycott of Israel, .several signs of peace heartened Israeli leaders and their friends during the past week. There were indications, that the Arab League may consent to direct negotia- tions with Israel on the Arab refugee issue. . Furthermore the Syrian-Israel agree- malt to start the border demarcations also indicated that peace was in the offing and that there are good chances for im- provements in the relations between the contending forces in the Middle East. Another indication of a more realis- tic approach to the discordant situation was the prompt apology made by the Jordanian delegation to the Israel-Jordan Mixed Armistice Commission for the murder of an Israeli night watchman at Ramat Rachel. In view of these developments, why is there such hesitancy in United Na- tions quarters to press for direct talks between Israel ad her neighbors to effect a peace settlement? cere negotiations to end the state of war in the Middle East. But. for reasons that are difficult to comprehend — possibly they are matters of expediency—United Nations leaders are the least active in peace efforts. On the other hand, the Israeli lead- ers never cease in their quest for peace, and remain optimistic that good relations will be established among the Semitic cousins. This is to the good. As long as peace is continually discussed, we may see it attained very soon. Valuable JNF 'Rosh Hodesh Book' . "Rosh Hodesh Book," a commendable Hebrew work book for children, compiled and edited by Yitzhak Abrahami, Isaac Levy and Shmuel Lowensohn, and published by the Jewish National Fund in England, is being utilized for local schools by the youth department of the Detroit Jewish National Fund. Together with an accompanying coloring book, the "Rosh Hodesh Book" should serve an excellent purpose in teaching our school children the symbols of the months, the important events occurring throughout the year, Hebrew terminologies, facts about great Jewish personalities born during the various months cov- ered in this book. The JNF is rendering a great service with its educational pamphlets for children, and the "Rosh Hodesh Book" is one in this valuable series.
