Borman Succeeds Kasle as Chairman of Believe Mountain-Climbing Couple
Israel Bond Drive; Women Select Leaders Were Victims of Arab Infiltrators on

southern Negev. Masada is
the Dead Sea.
Army officials suggested that
the killers were part of a larger
group of infiltrators operating
in the Negev and that those
who clashed with the patrol
were part of the same gang.

TEL AVIV — The likelihood
that two young mountain climb-
ers whose bullet-riddled bodies
were found on historic Masada
rock were the victims of Arab
infiltrators was strengthened
Tuesday by a report to Israel
police by another climber.

The rock, famous as a Jewish
fortress in the days of King
Herod and now a major attrac-
tion for mountain climbers, was
the site Monday of the death
of a total of five Israelis in a
series of disasters.

ABE KASLE and Mrs. PHILIP HELFMAN.

The first victims were the
young couple. Shortly after
their bodies were found, a wo-
man climber was killed by a
falling rock. A. few hours later,
an army Piper Cub investigat-
ing the slaying of the couple
crashed, killing its two occu-
pants.
The climber who brought the
report to police said he saw an
armed Jordanian dressed in
khaki and a second armed Arab
in typical Arabian garb ap-
proach the place where he saw
the young couple.

Authorities reacted skeptical-
ly to initial reports that the
slain couple, Tel Aviv residents
about 20 years of age, had been
victims of infiltrators because
no shots had been heard. Sub-
sequently it was noted that the
area is cut by numerous wadis
or depressions which could
have dampened any noise.
Another factor pointing to in-
filtrators was the fact that the
possessions of the victims, in-
cluding their watches, shoes
and water containers, had been
stolen.
The tragedies did not deter
the usual holiday influx of
climbers. Some 5,000 persons
came to Masada to make the
ascent which was easier this
year because ladders had been
installed.

At an enthusiastic meeting
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Abe Kasle, 19470 Lucerne, on
April 21, Tom Borman was
formally installed as Detroit
Israel Bond chairman, suc-
ceeding Mr. Kasle who served
in that capacity for two years.
Mesdames Joseph Katchke
and Max Stollman were wel-
comed as co-chairmen of the
Israel Bond Women's Divi-
sion, succeeding Mrs. Philip
Helfman.
It was announced that Mrs.
Samuel Aaron, who is promi-
nent in Bnai Brith, the Jewish
Welfare Federation Women's
Division. Brandeis University
Women's Chapter, ORT and
other movements, has assumed
the office of director of the
Israel Bond Women's Division.
In his introductory re-
marks, Kasle welcomed the
new chairman and compli-
mented him for his untiring
efforts in behalf of Israel
Bond activities in the past
few years. Kasle reported
that in the past two years
Detroit Jews had purchased
more than $1,700,000 in Israel
Bonds.
Borman outlined plans for
activities here immediately
upon the conclusion of the
Allied Jewish Campaign,
whose closing banquet has been
set for Monday.
To inaugurate the new
Israel Bond drive, Borman
said, a kosher catered din-
ner will be given at Hotel
