Ban on Marriages in Current Period

By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
(Copyright, 1959, JTA, Inc.)
Traditional Jews r e f r a i n
from having marriages per-
formed in the course of the
period between the Passover
and Shavuot holidays.
Generally, three reasons are
given for this tradition. The
most popular reason is that
this was a period of mourning
for the 24,000 students of
Rabbi Akiba who perished dur-
ing this period, because they
didn't respect each other. A
second reason given is that it
is the period between Pass-
over and Shavuot festivals
that judgment is carried out
against the inhabitants of Ge-
henna according to one of the
Tanaaim (Seder Olam Rabbah,
and Eduyyot). A third reason
given is that this period was
traditionally one of grave con-
cern on the part of the farm-
ers, because of the question as
to whether the spring crops
and summer fruits would come
forth in good measure to in-
sure the prosperity and se-
curity of the country. For
these reasons care is taken not

Rabbi Shapero, who was the
mainstay of the Dayton Univer-
sity varsity boxing team for
three years, won the Golden
Glove light-heavyweight title in
Dayton in 1948 and reached the
quarter-finals in the Midwest
Golden Gloves championships in
Chicago that year. He is also a

to have marriages performed
during this season, so as to
prevent any possible associa-
tion between the marriage and
misfortune.

In some localities, either
the women, or both women
and men, refrain from doing
any work between sunset
and the appearance of the
stars during this period.

Some claim that it was at
this time of the day that the
students of Rabbi Akiba were
brought to burial. At such a
time the whole populace was
engrossed with this awesome
duty, and all refrained from
any other activity, especially
mundane work. Others claim
that, since this is the period
when we prepare for the daily
count of the days and weeks in
the course of that period, a
kind of festival atmosphere
was asked for, so that the
moments be entirely devoted
to the consideration of the
count. Still others claim that
undivided attention was sought
for the period of counting, so
that there would be no dis-
tractions, and the procedure of
counting would be executed in
utmost seriousness, and would
impress the entire population
with its deeply significant im-
portance.
