The five cups of sparkling
wine on our Seder table are
symbolic of the different
stages of freedom from abject
bondage in the land of Egypt.
They are said to represent the
four promises that God made
to our ancestors after their
miraculous deliverance.
The fifth cup of wine, the
cup of the Prophet Elijah, rep-
resents the highest stage of
freedom and suggests a warm
sense of security.
The cup also plays an im-
portant part on other festivals

history of the ritual cup, the
two main points - for considera-

it is made as well as the form
of the vessel and its evolution
through the centuries.

The inscriptions on the old
cups represent the ideals and
hopes of an historic people.
Kiddush cups are often in-
scribed in Hebrew: "Remem-
ber the sabbath day to keep
it holy."
The Jewish Museum in New
York has a fine Austrian cup
with delicately engraved scenes
showing the return of the
"good spies" from the Holy
Land.
As to the making of these
cups and other Jewish ritual-
istic objects, it is interesting
to note that they were mostly
made by Gentile silversmiths.
The reason for this lies in the
fact that Jews were not al-
lowed to enter the guilds of
the metal workers. But the
Gentile artisan always acted
according to strict instructions
of the people who commis-
sioned the objects for Jewish
ritual use.

No other religion has so
many obejects for its practice
as does the Jewish faith. And
all these objects must be seen

"My cup runneth over"

In Genesis 15:5 is found the
oldest reference to the "divina-
tion cup," also a species of hy-
dromancy. According to rab-
binical explanation, Joseph
"feigned" to prophesy by strik-
ing on the cup." (Gen. Ra.
91:6.)
In the Talmud we find the
figurative use of the w o r d
"cup" for trouble and suffer-
ing. It has been preserved in
the expression "To taste the
taste of death." Ten, at one
time even fourteen cups, were
ordained for the house of
mourning (Ket. 8 b; Sanhed.
70 C). The "cup of benedic-
tion" refers to the third cup
of the four goblets at the Pass-
over meal. This custom is first
mentioned in Mishnah Ber.
(6:6) 'If wine comes to them
(a company of three or more)
during the meal, each one
blesses for himself, if after the
meal, one blesses for all of
them."

The "cup of consolation" is
offered to mourners (Jer.

lusion, perhaps, to the wine
of peace - offering (Shela-
