The dominance of Orthodoxy
"cannot conceal the fact that
Jewish life in Israel is becom-
ing more and more secularized,"
he asserted, adding that, speci-
fically, "the religious values of
school, home and synagogue,
insofar as they exist, tend to
disappear more and more." The
non-Orthodox Jew in Israel has
drifted "far away from all that
is dear and precious to Jews of
faith."
The Sabbath in Israel is "liter-
ally a day of rest and relax-
tion," rather than a religious
event, and "the feasts in Israel
have more of a popular than
religious character." Passover,
Shavuot and Sukkot "have again
become purely agricultural fes-
tivals, which also is a sign of
the tendency toward seculari-
zation."
The, human product of these
conditions, Rabbi Eelk wrote is
"a new type of Israeli" who is
different "not only in outward
appearance but who increasingly
loses the ties formerly held
with Jews abroad. He feels Is-
raeli, as the American feels
American, the Englishman Eng-
lish, but he lacks the distinct
religious convictions which ac-
company nation consciousness
in other parts of the world. He
is an Israeli but not a Jew."
He insisted, however, that
"the popular view that Is-
raelis are basically non-reli-
gious is wrong." He said that
there were many reasons to
believe that there is a basis
for the development of a non-
Orthodox movement which

One such indication he cited
was the fact that "nowhere else

does the average Jew penetrate
so deeply" into the Jewish
Scriptures as in Israel. "The
child who finishes elementary

school has already read and un-
derstood large parts of the
Torah, the Prophets, the Pro-
verbs and Psalms." The gradu-
ate of a secondary school, the

equivalent of the American
high school, can be considered

Conceding that knowledge of

faith," Rabbi Elk insisted that
"the transition from one to the
other is not too great a step."

In his second answer, Rabbi
Elk realistically admitted that
regardless of theory, Orthodox
elements in Israel have voci-
ferously questioned the "right
to function" of non-Orthodox
religious groups. He argued that
"if it will be possible to found
liberal congregations, then their
influence will be strong enough
to overcome Orthodox resis-
tance, even if this should lead
to the dreaded Kulturkampf."
Contending that only non-
Orthodox Judaism could achieve
a "religious revival" in Israel,
Rabbi Elk declared that if this
goal was not achieved, "the
powers of secularization and as-
similation will in the course of
time, get the upper hand every-
where. If Judaism as a religion
perishes here in Israel, where
will it remain alive?"

One answer was the conten-
tion that "wherever Jews
pray together, there is a reli-
gious community and no one
is entitled to question its
right to function. Therefore
there is no room for a dis-
pute over Reform versus
Orthodox forms of worship."

Season's Best Wishes
A Reform rabbi who came to
Israel from Germany nearly a
quarter of a century ago, hoping
to start a liberal Jewish move-
ment, is convinced that there
is a real danger that Judaism as
a religion may wither away in
Israel.
Rabbi Max Elk, founder and
principal of the Leo Baeck
School in Haifa, sees this
danger arising from the fact
that the average Israeli Jew
"cannot conceive of a Judaism
that is in complete harmony
with the new conditions which
confront present day society"
rather than from any general
hostility toward Judaism as a
religious way of life.
Rabbi Elk, who hopes to build
a "Liberal" synagogue in the
new building of his school, re-
ported on the prospects in
Israel for a non-Orthodox
Judaism in the current issue of
the Journal of the Central Con-
ference of American Rabbis.
