the pamphlet, "The Impact of
Zionism on American Jewry,"
published by the Herzl Insti-
tute.
Dr. Duker, who was the first
educator to hold the LaMed
Chair of Jewish Studies at
Wayne State University in the
first year of the Chair's func-
tioning here, outlines the events
that led to Jewish Statehood
and refers to the emergence of
Israel as having been " a sud-
den and forced realization of
the Zionist idea of a Jewish
national home."
- Zionism is described as a
force that counteracted spir-
itual deterioration. The move-
ment, he explains, rescued
many Jews from assimilation,
and reduced anti-religious
tensions among youth.
The Movement, he indicates,
appeals to all elements, it de-
stroys negative residues in
Jewish experiences, brings
broader prespective to its ad-
