Egyptian Court Orders Confiscation
of Israel Cargoes Seized at Suez

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The
United Arab Republic's so-
called War Spoils Court ordered
the confiscation of cargoes
taken by the United Arab Re-
public from a West German
ship and a Liberian freighter
which were carrying the freight

War Veterans Assembly
Demands Free Navigation

ROME, (JTA),---With veter-
ans from all over the , free
world in attendance, and a five-
man Israeli delegation promi-
nently participating,. the eighth
General Assembly of the World
War Veterans Federation adopt-
ed a resolution, unanimously,
calling for "free navigation for
all nations through all inter-
national -waterways and the
elimination of economic boy-
cotts as a weapon for attain-
ment of political results.
Israel's delegation, led by
Meir Bar Ravhay, warmly sup-
ported another resolution, call-
ing for the establishment of a
permanent international police
force "to ease international ten-
sions and lead disputing states
to resolve such disputes through
direct negotiations." The plan
is to establish such a force on
the basis of the experiences of
the United Nations Emergency
Force, which is on duty in the
Gaza Strip and along the shore
of the Gulf of Akaba.
In the presence of Lt. Gen.
E. L. M. Burns, commander of
the UNEF, Ravhay praised the
work of the UNEF on the
Israel-Egyptian border. At the
same time, he announced that
he has "full authority" to offer,
on behalf of Israel, direct, face-
to-face peace talks with Arab
states.

through the Suez Canal from
Haifa, Israel, to destinations in
the Orient.
The seizures took place late
in February and early in March,
and have been vigorously pro-
tested by Israel in a letter to
the United Nations Security
Council.
The decision to "legalize" the
cargo confiscations through a
ruling by Egypt's quasi-judicial
court is seen here as an effort
by the UAR to foreclose the
issue before the arrival of
United Nations Undersecretary
Ralph J. Bunche. The latter is
on his way to Cairo as personal
representative of Secretary
General Dag Hammarskjold,
and is reportedly scheduled to
demand the release of the
cargoes.
(At United Nations head-
quarters in New York, Jacob
Blaustein met with UN Secre-
tary General Dag Hammarsk-
jold, and discussed with him
the seizure by Egypt of Israeli
cargoes at the Suez Canal. The
two also discussed other mat-
ters concerning the Middle
East.)
The ruling by the so-called
"War Spoils Court" does not
alter the situation in the least,
according to political observers
here. The latter point out that
the very seizure of the cargoes,
prior to their confiscation, was
a violation of international law.

TEL AVIV--One of the great-
est services Israel could render
to the free world is to counter
the "spurious Western doctrine
of white supremacy" by be-
friending the emerging nations
of Asia and Africa, former U.S.
Senator Herbert H. Lehman
stated here Monday night, at a
dinner given in his honor by
the Israeli American Friendship
Society.
Prominent Israelis, including
representatives of the Foreign
Ministry, attended the event.
Israel could perform a vast
service to the world, Lehman
declared by befriending the new
Afro-Asian nations "not only in
the name of Israel but in the
name of democracy and free-
dom." While the Communists
oppose discrimination based on
color class or national origin,

_Lehma ndeclared, "The spurious
Western doctrine of white sup-
remacy has been manifested in
Asia and Africa and in the
United States." He expressed
the belief that that doctrine. "Is
the major sources of political
difficulties, that confront the
Western Powers today."
"To recover its position of
leadership as far as Africa and
Asia are concerned," he con-
tinued; "the - West must show its
intention and desire to accept
those people on a basis of equal-
ity without the stigma of infe-
riority based on race origin or
area. The White Western supe-
riority doctrine must be vig-
orously repudiated."
Israel's appeal to the new na-
tions, Lehman went on, "May
be due to the fact that Israel is
a country whose people under-
stand the wounds that result-
from cult of racial superiority."

1 DENVER, (JTA)—Anti-Jew-

ish discrimination in employ-
ment has virtually become ex-,
tinct, according to a statement
by Edward Miller, local leader
of the Anti-Defamation League
of the Bnai Brith, made to the
Intermountain Jewish News
here.
Miller said that. in 1958 and
so far in 1959, the state FEP
commission received no Jewish
complaints. Sheldon Steinhau-
ser, ADL director, said his local
office received four complaints
of job bias during this 15-month
period, but in each case, in-
vestigation disclosed that no an-
ti-Jewish prejudice was in-
volved.
