After all, the Hearst newspapers are not just one guy. They are everybody connected with the production of the papers. On that basis I can honestly tell you that accepting this award fills me with real pride." Hearst added that "we in the Hearst organization would like to think that the principle of Americanism and service to the community are the paramount principles that guide us always. He paid tribute to "my Pop" who originally championed these ideas and quoted from his father's editorials to indicate his devotion to high ideals. John Manning, editor of the Detroit Times, and Walter Aranoff, the Detroit Times circulation manager, s a i d they were thrilled to learn that the head of the Hearst newspapers was chosen for the high Bnai Brith award. They added that the Detroit Times at all times adheres to the principles acclaimed at the Bnai Brith luncheon meeting in New York on Sunday . NEW YORK (AJP)—A three- part lecture — "The Develop- ment of Israel's Foreign Policy and Its Spiritual Motive" — read from a prepared text at the Jewish Theological Semi- nary of America by Yaacob Her- zog came as a disappointment to a select audience of scholars and students who were already fully aware of the plain and simple points outlined in a monotone manner by the Min- ister Plenipotentiary of the State of Israel. It was generally felt at the Seminary . that the fact of Reid's reverting to the class- room in order to understand better the people to whom he is accredited is a very encour- aging sign marking a turning- point in the diplomatic history of the U.S. was the view expressed by a number of those present who came to hear the Chaim Weiz- mann Lecture of the Seminary Israel Institute. • It was unfortunate, therefore, that Minister Herzog, during his lecture, should show something less than either modesty or humility. It can only be hoped that Reid did not use this Using "dictionary term s" occasion to pass judgment in which possibly only an Abba his mind upon the nature of Eban could get away with;,Min- ister Herzog overdid himself. It -was an astonishing spec- tacle witnessed by your AJP reporter who received similar reactions from numerous people present including a well-known Israeli veteran newsman. Among those in the audience were such distinguished person- alities as Mr. and Mrs. Ogden- Reid and Prof. William F. Al- bright. Mr. Reil is the newly- appointed U.S. ambassador to Israel. The presentation was made by Henry Edward Schultz, na- tional chairman of the Anti- Defamation League and a mem- ber of the New York City Board of Higher Education, who stated that the Hearst press has been a leader in creating an at- mosphere of freedom, enabling Jewish traditions and culture to thrive and flourish. Schultz recalled that as early as 1911 the late Wil- liam Randolph Hearst de- nounced Russian persecutions of Jews before a packed Car- negie Hall gathering and championed the cause of free- dom for oppressed Jews. The younger Hearst, honored by Bnai Brith, continues "his father's fighting spirit of freedom and equality for all," Schultz added. "His feet are firmly on the ground, his head is in the clouds of idealism and between we find a warm heart." The ADL chairman recalled Hearst's interviews with Israel's Prime Minister David Ben-Gu- rion and his enthusiastic de- scriptions of his visit in Israel. He spoke of Hearst's "warm at- titude in sitting down- with members of the Anti-Defama- tion League to discuss Jewry's problems" and praised Hearst and his associates for `the exclu- sive Pulitzer Prize-winning in- terviews with Soviet leaders in 1955. Bible Scoffers Draw Blast from Ben-Gurion JERUSALEM, (JTA) — So- called "modernists" and "pro- gressives" who snub the Bible as "passe" were castigated here by Primp Minister David Ben- Gurion. 'He voiced his attacks in an address opening a four- day Biblical research convention here. Regardless of skeptics and cynics, Ben-Gurion sated, "the immortal values of the Book of Books" remain unchanged to- day. Several hundred delegates from all parts of Israel are at- tending the convention. The sessions are devoted en- tirely to the Books of Isaiah and Ezekiel, and feature pre- sentations by leading scholars of learned papers dealing with the eras when these two proph- ets lived.
