THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS -- Friday, April 17, Governor Williams Absent from Africa Day Celebration Which Banned Israel Direct JTA Teletype Wire To The Jewish News UNITED NATIONS, N. Y.— Three governors and the Mayor of New York absented them- selves Wednesday from the dip- lomatic reception celebrating African Freedom Day from which Israel alone among the members of the United Nations had been excluded at the insis- tence of the Arab bloc. The pr omin en t absentees were New York Governor Nel- son A. Rockefeller, Connecticut Governor Abraham Ribicoff, Michigan Governor G. Mennen Williams and New York Mayor Robert F. Wagner. The diplo- matic reception without Israel and minus these four prominent Americans was held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Israel, however, was also in- vited and was represented at the second important event cele- brating African Freedom Day observed at Carnegie Hall Wednesday night. The evening event conducted by the Ameri- can. Committee on Africa had invited all Asian and African member states as guests of honor. A number of United Nations delegates from non-Arab Afri- can states showed embarrass- ment over Israel's exclusion from the diplomatic list for the afternoon reception. The com- mittee of nine delegations in charge of the afternoon event consisted of representatives from the United Arab Republic, Sudan, Morocco, Tunis, Libya, Ghana, Ethiopia, Guinea and Li- beria. Israel has excellent rela- tions with the four non-Arab states in this group. In answer to a question about the afternoon event, a spokes- man for the Israel delegation stated here Wednesday: "Israel has not been invited for the simple reason that five ANNOUNCES THAT of the nine countries concerned are members of the Arab League. The Arab League has always pursued an intransigent policy of boycotting Israel. The exclusion of Israel comes from the undue pressure which these five states have brought to bear an the others. It is regrettable that the others should have found themselves, however un- willingly, constrained to yield to these pressures resulting in an act of discrimination which vi- olates the accepted traditions of courtesy between nations." Believe Successor to Adenauer Will Follow Pro-Jewish Policies BONN, (JTA)—Political cir- cles here expressed the belief that Dr. Konrad Adenauer's de- termined opposition to resur- gent Nazism and anti-Semitism in West Germany will be con- tinued by his successor in the Chancellory, which Dr. Aden- auer will leave this summer. E. Shinar, head of the Israel Repa- rations Mission to West Ger- many, declared in connection with reports from Bonn that Chancellor Adenauer will lay down his post to seek the Fed- eral German Presidency. Shinar spoke at a dinner of the Foreign Press Association here. He said that Dr. Aden- auer's possible successor is Dr. Ludwig Erhard, Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economic Af- fairs, whose dealings with re- gard to reparations problems are very encouraging from Is- rael's point of view. Shinar avoided making any prediction as to who may be- come the West German Minister of Economic Affairs if Dr. Er- hard should become Chancellor.
