In issuing its annual Passover message to the Jewish commun- ity of Detroit, the Vaad Hara- bonim, Council of Orthodox Rabbis, urged that "every Jew meticulously observe the laws of Passover." The statement stressed that great care should be exercised in purchasing all food products. Following are some of the points mentioned in the appeal: 1. Matzos baked during the year are not for Passover use. All matzos must be specifically designated for such use and earry the proper label; 2. Every product must be cer- tified by a known rabbi or rab- binical organization. Separately attached labels with the words "Kosher l'Pesach" do not make the product permissible for Passover; 3. All bakeries, groceries and delicatessens are asked to sell their chometz through a rabbi Ito lat er than 10:30 a.m., Wednesday. A certificate issued by a rabbi who arranges the sale will then be displayed in the business place; 4. For the duration of Pass- over, it is prohibited to buy or sell chometz, even to a non- Jew; 5. The search for chometz takes place on Tuesday evening; 6. Siyum b'Chorim (the fast of the first born) is held on Monday; 7. No chometz may be eaten after 9:30 a.m., Wednesday; 8. Selling of chometz must take place before 10:30 a.m., Wednesday; 9. Removal and burning cho- metz also must be done before 10:30 a.m., Wednesday. 10. Bakeries will be closed from 9:15 a.m., Wednesday, un- til a f ter Passover. Bakeries which prepare to bake before 8:15 p.m., April 30, when the holiday ends, are considered in violation, and these products are not to be eaten even after Passover. Questions on any rule for Passover should be addressed to one's own rabbi or to the Vaad Harabonim, TO 5-9100. •■ -- * * * A late sabbath service, at 8:45 p.m., today, will inaugu- rate a weekend program of festivities planned by members of the Evergreen Jewish Con- gregation for the dedication of its new building. Tucker Thrills Doting Audience Fourteen Hundred Persons at the Adas Shalom Richard Tucker concert last Sunday went mildly wild in applause for the Metropolitan Opera star following his first half program of operatic arias. But they kicked over all traces and became completely raving in their ovations and "bravo" and "Bis" calls when Tucker finally came to what the audi- ence really came to hear — a selection of Yiddish and Heb- rew folk songs and liturgical selections. Tucker brought to bear all the grand tradition of his can- torial background and the pow- er and discipline of his Metro- politan Opera singing to ele- vate his rendition of "Elu D'vorim" to heights that few have been privileged to hear. After five enthusiastically- received encores, he was forced to demur to bring an end to what could have wound up as a full night of raw clapping hands and an unending series of encores. The program was sponsored by the Adas Shalom Men's Club. Tucker was introduced by Rabbi Jacob E. Segal, spiri- tual leader of Adas Shalom. — N. L. TEL AVIV, (JTA) — Two Arab infiltrators were killed by an Israeli Army border patrol on the Israel side of the Gaza Strip border. According to army spokesmen, the men were caught dismantling irrigation pipes, and attempted to escape after warning shots were fired by the patrol. Near the site of the incident, members of the patrol found a camel, apparently belonging to the Arabs, and a British rifle. Footprints were traced leading from the Egyptian side of the border to the site of the inci- dent. Three Lebanese fishermen were sentenced here to two-year prison terms for illegal fishing within Israeli territorial waters. The men were captured while they were using explosives for fishing, a practice contrary to Israel law. During his brief stay here, Rabbi Eisenman will solicit funds for one of his favorite institutions, the Bicur Cholem Hospital in Jerusalem, which he has been helping to support for many years, and of which he is one of three rabbinic trustees. In his plea for support, Rabbi Eisenman stresses that the hos- pital, one of the oldest institu- tions of its kind in Jerusalem, is now engaged in a building campaign, making the need for additional funds urgent.
