A trip to Israel "not only as
a reward for his 10 years of
service as executive director of
the Jewish Community Council,
but as a stimulus for further
inspired service" was the high-
light of a reception given Wed-
nesday night, at Temple Israel
for Boris M. Joffe:
The official program of the
evening, which included re-
marks from several leaders in
the community, was strikingly
warm because of the genuine
friendships Joffe has made in
his 10 years in Detroit.
Rabbi Morris Adler, chair-
man of the evening and a vice-
president of the Council,
pointed out that Joffe was
deeply rooted in the Jewish
community and, at the same
time, in the larger community.
"By devotion," the rabbi said,
"he has been able to serve in
both these areas, and he has
won for the Council a host of
friends."
LawrenCe Crohn, Council
president who appeared for the
first time at a public function
since his return from an ex-
tended trip to Israel, empha-
sized the work that Joffe had
accomplished here in making
the Council an agency which
bolstered the fact of Israel's
statehood.
The Council president add-
ed that it was only right that
Boris Joffe should see the
end product of the work he
has helped to accomplish in
the Jewish state, hinting at
the Israel trip which was
later given to Joffe and his
wife, Miriam.
Attending the reception as
"a fellow professional," but
also bringing greetings from
the Jewish Welfare Federation,
of which he is executive vice-
president, was Isidore Sobeloff.
"Usually," he said, "it is the
lay leader who is honored as
the symbol of the organization.
But lay leadership without pro-
fessional leadership is not
enough, just as professional
leadership without a commun-
ity behind it is insufficient."
After extending his personal
greetings to Joffe as a co-
worker in many communal
undertakings and as a personal
friend, Prof. William Haber,
University of Michigan econ-
omics professor, spoke of the
growth of the Jewish commun-
ity as a recent phenomenon.
He pointed out that while
in 1954 the community cele-
brated its 300th year of settle-
ment, it has been only in the
last 25 years that "we have
begun to deal with each other
as a community—in matters of
education, community rela-
tions, foreign relations and
with liberal friends of other
faiths."
"We have only begun to
make known our problems as
Jews and as Americans. We
still have much to learn. We
have made mistakes and we
will make more. But the

work of the past 10 years
with Boris as director of the
Council will provide a basis
for further growth and fur-
ther progress," he concluded.
The presentation of the trip
to Israel was made by Dr.
Shmarya Kleinman, past Coun-
cil president and chairman of
the arrangements committee for
the testimonial. He also read
a resolution drafted by the
Council citing Joffe's "zeal for
the improvement of relations
among his fellow man."
In his response, Joffe touch-
ingly addressed a few words to
his three children who were . in
attendance. He told them that
he hoped their presence would
help them understand the work
that has still to be done in
the community, and that per-
haps they would be able to see
why their father cannot spend
as much time with them as he
wishes.
He then went on to thank
his friends, the lay leadership
of the Council and compli-
mented himself on having "the
best professional staff in the
world.",
In a more serious mood,
Joffe called for a re-orienta-
tion of ideas to provide more
educational, cultural and
democratic outlets for the
community.
Nearly 250 people attended
the reception, including Fed-
eral Judge Arthur Lederle, Cir-
cuit Judge Wade McCree and-
NAACP leader Edward Turner.
A host of telegrams, express-
ing wishes for continued suc-
cess, came from many sources,
including Gov. Williams, Mayor
Miriani, Sen. Hart and Simcha
Pratt, Consul General of Israel.

Record 22,000 Visits
to New Center
During Six Weeks

More than 22,000 members
and guests used the physical
education and health club facil-
ities of the Jewish Community
Center's new main building,
during its first six weeks of
operation.
During the month of March,
16,999 persons were logged in
by the physical education de-
partment. The last two weeks
of February — when the Cen-
ter first opened — saw 5,294
come into the physical educa-
tion department, for a six-week
total of 22,293.
Staff figures show that the
present rate of use is about 3,-
750 a week, of which about
two-thirds are male and about
one-third female. The last week
of March 4,056 persons were
checked in.
These statistics are based on
total number of times the fa-
cilities were used — that is, if
a person came in several times,
each visit was counted as one
unit. Based on this, 16,240
males and 6,043 females used
the Center's facilities during
the initial six-week period.
