Two imposing volumes, pub-
lished by the Hebrew UniOn
College Press and distributed
by University Publishers (59 E.
54th, N.Y. 22), give due recog-
nition to the services that
have been rendered in the past
decade by Dr. Jacob Rader
Marcus, director of the Ameri-
can Jewish Archives, as his-
torian, as compiler of historical
documents and as editor of
valuable data relating to Am-
erican Jewish history.
The 550-page "Essays in
American-Jewish History" was
published "in commemoration
of the tenth anniversary of the
founding of the American
Jewish Archives under the di-
rection of Jacob Rader Mar-
cus."
Dr. Marcus, who just recent-
ly was named chairman of
the newly-established Adolph
Ochs Chair in Jewish History
at Hebrew Union College-Jew-
ish Institute of Religion, is
the author of the second vol-
ume, the 510-page "American
Jewry — Documents —
Eighteenth Century."
Each of the volumes serves
an important need. The docu-
ments will be treasured by all
historically-minded people and
by those who do research in
American Jewish history. The
book of essays contains ma-
terial of such great merit that
the book must be rated among
the outstanding contributions
to the literature that is aimed
at keeping intact facts about
notable personalities and their
time and the issues in which
they were involved.
"Essays in American Jewish
History"—referred to by the
editors as a Festschrift—opens
appropriately with tributes to
Dr. Marcus by Dr. Nelson
Glueck, president of the He-
brew Union College-Jewish In-
stitute of Religion, creator of
the Jewish Archives, and Dr.
Bertram W. Korn, of Philadel-
phia, who last month succeeded
Dr. Marcus as president of the
American Jewish Historical
Society.
To Dr. Marcus, who is
- Adolph S. Ochs, Professor of
Jewish History at Hebrew
Union College, Rabbi Korn
pays this compliment: "The
Archives is the expression of
his personality, his high aca-
demic standards, his penetrat-
ing search for source materials,
his love of his Judaism and his
America."
In addition to these two
tributes, there is an interesting
