Flint UJA to Hear
Rabbi Friedman at
Rally on Thursday
Early Deadline Set for
Our Passover Issue
Rabbi Herbert A. Friedman,
executive vice-chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal, will
speak next Thursday, 8:30 p.m.,
at Beth Israel Synagogue, Flint,
in behalf of the UJA special
fund and the 1959 campaign.
Rabbi Friedman has made
frequent trips to refugee trou-
ble spots, in-
cluding lonely
border cross-
ings, refugee
camps and
ghettos in
North Africa.
Together with
Moses A. Lea-
vitt, executive
vice-chairman
of the Joint
Rabbi Friedman Distribution
Committee, Rabbi Friedman
met the Egyptian liner "Misr"
which landed 976 terrorized, ex-
pelled and penniless Jews at
Naples, Italy, on Jan. 6th, 1957.
They also visited the Austrian-
Hungarian border to talk with
some of the 16,500 Jews who
were part of the 165,000 escap-
ees of all faiths who fled the
Communist regime in Hungary
after the revolution of 1956.
Rabbi Friedman was among the
first to study the Romanian em-
igration in Vienna, Naples and
Haifa, early this year.
The first Passover Seder will be observed on
Wednesday evening, April 22.
The annual PassoVer Issue of The Jewish
News will go to press a day earlier than usual,
necessitating the setting of an earlier deadline for
all copy for that issue.
All copy for that issue MUST reach our office
before noon on Friday, April 17.
Timely copy reacbing us after that hour will
be retained for the following week's issue, and
other copy reaching us too late for current insertion
will of necessity be completely eliminated.
We therefore urge all our readers, including
publicity writers for congregations and organiza-
tions, to make note of this unbreakable deadline
regulation.
The deadline for Classified ads for the Pass-
over issue will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21.

The South Shore Jewish Com-
munity Council and the local
Veterans of Foreign Wars
traded charges in the growing
struggle over prayers in the
public schools of this suburban
school district.
The Community Council an-
nounced a call for a public rally
on April 15 to protest "sectarian
religious practices" in t h e
schools of School District 15
which covers Inwood, Law-
rence, Cedarhurst, Atlantic
Beach, Meadowmere Park and
part of Woodmere.
Rabbi Abraham Goodman of
Temple Sinai in Lawrence,
president of the Community
Council, said that the daily
prayers in the district's six ele-
mentary schools and occasional
prayers in the high school "of=
fend the religious conscience
of a large segment of the com-
munity.
John M. Pancia, commander
of - the Inwood VFW post, said
his post and the Nassau County
Council of VFW were on record
as approving the use of non-
denominational prayer in the
public schools.
Taking a stand in total oppo-
sition to that of most Jewish
organizations, Pancia asserted
that "the mere utterance of a
prayer does not constitute an
infringement of the basic prin-
ciples of separation of church
and state."

_
KIEL (JTA)—An investiga-
tion that could lead to crim-
inal prosecution began here
into the activities and status
of Dr. Franz Schlegelsberger,
who has been Deputy Minister
of Justice under the Hitler
regime.
The former Hitler official
was accused of having ad-
mitted in a report during
World War II, to his supe-
riors, that he had "turned over
to the Secret Police" -a Jew
named Markus Luftgrass, "for
execution." The report stated
that Luftgrass had been turned
over despite the fact that he,
had been sentenced only to
prison by a Nazi court at Kat-
towitz.
The Schleswig-Holstein Min-
istry of Justice announced the
probe as a result of an inquiry
voiced in the West German
Parliament, at Bonn, recently,
by a member of the opposition
Social Democratic Party. The
Social Democrat spokesman
wanted to know whether Dr.
Schlegelsberger was ever pros-
ecuted for war crimes, and
whether he was now receiving
a government pension.
VIENNA (JTA) — Konrad
Windisch, publisher of "Der
Tromitiler" (The Clarion), was
sentenced to six months' impris-
onment for publishing an article
found by the court to be "full
of neo-Nazi propaganda."
Windisch is the self-styled
"fuehrer" of the National Youth
Austria Organization, whose
members wear uniforms similar
to those worn during the Nazi
regime by the Hitler Youth.
Some of his followers tried to
stage a demonstration after he
was sentenced, but the effort
was broken up by police.

It is possible to see now an
unusual sight in Tel-Aviv and
in the other cities of Israel:
guests from distant lands in
Asia and Africa stroll in the
streets and enter shops; some
of them are even beginning to
speak Hebrew.
'The guests, part of whom
wear their colorful dress, came
to Israel for studies. The Afro-
Asian seminar on cooperatives
had not yet finished in Tel-
Aviv, and already the inter-
national seminar on adult edu-
cation began. To these two
seminars important people
came from Japan, Burma, the
Philippines, Siam, India and
Ceylon in Asia and many coun-
tries in Africa.
