Chief Rabbi Louis Rabinowitz
of S. Africa Publishes Sermons

As Chief Rabbi of Synagogues
of the Transvaal and United
Hebrew Congregation of Johan-
nesburg, South Africa, Rabbi
Louis I. Rabinowitz has won
high esteem and his published
as well as his spoken words are
of great influence in his own
communities and wherever he
travels.
His wisdom is reflected in
his published sermons on the
Sabbath Eve service, which
Bloch has • just issued under
the title "Sabbath Light."
Adding to the merits of
this interesting collection of
sermons is the Evening Serv-
ice for Sabbath, which in-
cludes the Kabalath Shabbat
and the Maariv.

There is a great diversity of
subjects covered in this volume.
Dr. Rabinowitz spoke about
Purim, Passover, Hanukah and
other holidays. He dealt with
the Sh'ma, the value of cere-
monials, the Kaddish, Kol
Nidre, the Kiddush, the impor-
tance of the Sermon.
An eminent Zionist leader,
Rabbi Rabinowitz devoted many
of his addresses to Zionism
and to Israel's needs.
In his introduction, Dr.
Rabinowitz writes that the
Friday evening service at-
tracts larger congregations
than on the Sabbath morning
and he analyzes the reason
for it: "If on the one hand
the widespread non-observ-
ance of the Sabbath—which
is by no means entirely due
to economic reasons—is the
most unpleasing feature of
the religious life of the com-
munity, the tradition of reg-
ular attendance at synagogue
on • Friday evenings is one
of the most encouraging.
There is hardly a community
which contains ten males
which does not muster a
`Minyan' regularly on Friday
night, while in the more
popular synagogues in the
towns the regular attendances
number hundreds. Whatever
one's views may be of an
attitude to Sabbath which ex-
presses itself in attendance
at synagogue on Friday night,
at business on Sabbath morn-
ing and at Sports Club in the
afternoon, the fact remains
that this tradition of syna-
gogue attendance is one of
the most post powerful of
contributory factors towards
the maintenance of religious
cohesiveness and loyalty."
His book is a valuable contri-
bution to sermonic literature.
