continuing help as human be-
ings in need, until a solution
of Arab-Israel differences are
brought about. In this con-
nection, he said, the United
Nations has a great responsi-
bility. He urged that the world
should think of the problem
and try to understand it.
King • Hussein emphasized he
did not ask the United States
during his visit for any new
territorial guarantees, beyond
present commitments. He voiced
general opposition to the United
Arab Republic and Presideht
Nasser. He suggested that Nas-
ser was not telling the truth
when he recently stated that
the UAR sought Arab support
for a war against Israel five
months ago, and that Iraq re-
neged. The King said Jordan
received no such request from
Nasser.
A warning was sounded by
the King against Communist
penetration of the region. He
charged that some Arabs were
collaborating with Communism.

King Hussein, in a tele-
vision interview Sunday, said
that the settlement of some
of the Arab refugees in Arab
lands might in part solve the
refugee problem.

The young ruler of Jordan
expressed the opinion that the
immigration of Jews from Ro-
mania to Israel does not repre-
sent an "immediate danger" to
the Arab countries. He ruled
out the possibility of Jordan
negotiating with Israel by it-
self.
No individual Arab state is
in a position to enter into
negotiations with Israel, he
stated. He said the United
Nations has the responsibility
to try to keep the Arab-Israel
borders free from complica-
tions.

Operations Mission
to Assist Israel in
Upbuilding Tourism

TEL AVIV (JTA) — T h e
American Embassy announced
the signing of an agreement on
a project to improve Israel's
tourist industry. The project
will provide courses in hotel
management, tour planning,
food preparation, catering and
publicity.
The United States Operations
Mission will provide the funds
for the courses, which will be
directed by a group of experts
from the United States during
1960 and 1961. Tourism is
Israel's second largest net for-
eign currency producer, with a
return of more than $12,000,000
to Israel in 1958.
The USOM also announced
the arrival here of Dr. Richard
Cook, chief of the sound section
of the United States Bureau of
Standards. Dr. Cook will assist
Israel's Standards Institute in
establishing an acoustical la-
boratory to test certain types
of metals during a three-month
stay.
At a USOIVI ceremony, John
Haggerty, head of the Mission,
announced that 420 Israel ex-
perts have received training in
the United States under USOM
auspices. He disclosed this in
awarding achievement certifi-
cates to seven more Israel ex-
perts who have returned from
their training periods in the
United States. He stressed the
importance of training experts

was hope for an eventual solu-
tion of the Israel-Arab problem,
and that it would come sooner
—once the world "properly" un-
derstood the question. The King
spoke before the National Press
Club.
He made no mention of Is-
rael or Zionism in his formal
address, and commented only
in mild terms when question-
ed directly on issues involving
Israel by name. The King ex-
pressed disagreement with Is-
rael, but his remarks lacked
the vitriolic bitterness usual-
ly voiced by Arab leaders.
King Hussein said the Israeli
issue was not a question for
Jordan alone, but a matter of
justice for the Palestinian
Arabs, the Arab people, the
United Nations, and the world.
As far as Jordan was concerned,
the King said he would hesitate
to enunciate any particular
terms Jordan would require.
The King cited the hostile Is-
rael-Jordan frontier : and said
he did not think anyone hoped
a solution should not come. He
said all hope that a joint solu-
tion will come soon, and would
arrive sooner once people
throughout the world under-
stand it properly.
