the conversion for several years.
Her conversion, however, caught
the film colony by surprise.
The conversion was an-
nounced by Temple Israel, of
which Rabbi Max Nussbaum, a
leading Reform rabbi and Zion-
igt, is spiritual leader. A spokes-
man for the temple said that
the announcement was made at
Miss Taylor's request and that
conversions normally are not
announced.
Rabbi Nussbaum, who con-
ducted the ceremony, said that
the death of Mike Todd in a
plane crash in 1958, apparently
intensified the 27-year-old act-
ress' desire to become a Jew.
He said she had been ,studying
Judaism for t.11 -13ast six months.
S he was a good pupil," said
Rabbi Nussbaum. "She has a
good understanding of Jewish
life, and has read extensively
in Jewish history."
Her agent, Kurt Firings,
quoted Miss Taylor as telling
him that her conversion "has
nothing to do with any future
marriage plans. This is some-
thing I've wanted to do for a
long time."
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Taylor,
the actress' parents, attended
the conversion ceremony, at
which she took an oath to up-
hold the standards of Judaism.

Lawson pointed out that the

He said in Israel "they watch
Nasser rather than Kruslachev."
The ambassador lauded Is-
rael's progress in development.
He said there had been "very
definitely an improvement in
