Pope Orders Centuries-Old 'Perfidy' Sabbath Observer Fights for Right to Jobless Pay BOSTON, (JTA)—An early worked on Saturdays or Jewish Prayer for Jews to Be Dropped Bershak noted that the pres- This year, for the first time since Christianity's early years, Good Friday prayers were re- cited by Catholics without the traditional reference to "per- fidious Jews." The change in - the liturgy came about last week by order of Pope John XXIII, who struck the reference in the passage from the prayer for the conversion of the Jews, "Oremus pro perfidis Iudeais," which now is read without the "perfidis." The change in the prayer's at- titude was begun by the late Pope Pius XII, who ordered that translations of the prayer substitute "unbelieving" for "perfidious." The move was hailed in Rome as a great moral victory achieved by the Union of Ital- ian Jewish Communities and, especially, by one of the top leaders of Italian Jewry, Col. Lamberto Vitali. In 1946, Col. Vitali started a move for the elimination of that hateful revenge. On 41 dif- ferent occasions, since 1946, he petitioned the Vatican Secre- tariat on this subject, and a number of times he followed through with personal interven- tions with Pope Pius XII. •In 1948, the Vatican's Sacred Congregation issued a declara- tion, stating that "it would not be prohibited" to alter the old "perfidious" phrase with a sub- stitution referring to Jews as "infidels" or merely as "unbe- lievers." However, since that declaration was only permissive, and not mandatory, all Catholic prayer books retained the old phrasing. Last November, Col. Vitali addressed a petition on this subject to the new spiritual leader of Catholicism, Pope John XXIII. The Pontiff replied promptly, saying that he was requesting an analysis of the "Good Friday" liturgy from the Sacred Congregation. Just be- fore this year's "Good Friday," the Vatican issued a Papal Order changing the liturgy. From now on, the phrasing is not optional, but mandatory. Catholics pray "for the Jew," without referring to the Jew in insulting fashion. Jewish circles here point to this order by Pope John XXIII as "an illustration of his sense of justice in promptly correct- ing an old error which could instill hatred in new genera- tions." (In the United States, the ac- tion of Pope John XXIII in ord- ering the deletion of the anti- Jewish adjective from the "Good Friday" prayer was lauded by the American Jewish Commit- tee and other Jewish organiza- tions. Another change was made in the procedure. The appellant, a resident of suburban Newton, told the Re- view Board she had never nine. After each it was the custom to kneel—except after the one for the conversion of Jews. This was taken as a rebuff to Jews for the alleged mocking of Christ on the way to the cross. This is at present disputed by Catholic prayer books, which say it was the Roman soldiers and not the Jews who mocked Christ. So for the first time in 11 cen- turies, kneeling followed the prayer for the Jews. `Cavalcade of Holidays' Beth Abraham Synagogue's Bnai Moshe to Elect adult education series will fea- New Officers Sunday ture Rabbi Israel I.
