NEW YORK, (AJP) — The
inspiring motion picture version
of "The Diary of Anne Frank,"
the opening of which this re-
viewer witnessed at the RKO
Palace Theater here last week,
failed to produce—in spirit and
action—the truly Jewish-
inspirited girl which the orig-
inal "Anne" must have been as
judged by her diary.
This is unfortunate because
the production as a whole is
a masterpiece. • Producer and
director George Stevens is to
be congratulated for a wonder-
ful film, which brings you very
close to the people and places
involved in the "Diary" tragedy.
But, alas, Millie Perkins—
selected out of thousands of
teenage girls—has nothing
much Jewish about her. Though
pretty and talented as an
actress, she fails to project that
inner spiritual Jewish spark
which had stirred the very
heart-strings of Anne Frank
closeted in that dilapidated old
Amsterdam flat. On the other
hand, Joseph Schildkraut, in
every sense of the word, makes
a perfect Otto Frank. He is
simply great in this role.
With the exception of !Anne"
—the main character of the
story—the cast is excellent.
Shelley Winters, Lou Jacobi
and Richard Beymer as the Van
Daans; Gusti Huber as Mrs.
Frank; Diane Baker as Margot
Frank; Douglas Spencer as
Kraler; Dody Heath as Miep,
and Ed Wynn as Dussell—all
excel in that they bring to life
an episode of human horror
never to be forgotten.
Despite the one shortcoming
—and several others -which
Meyer. Levin might have reciti-
fied if given a hand—"The
]diary of -Anne- Pram,"as-
fiIr ~ a `will do much - to disarm
anti-Se rites. .. -
Oita Frank, -Anne Frank's fa--
`ther,•.arrived here - list-weekend
and plans. to remain for about
10 days. The- purpose of his
visit is to interest people in a
project to establish a center
for young peoples from various
parts of the .world. Mr. Frank
plans to set the Center up in
the old Amsterdam building
where he and his family were
trapped for two years during
the war. Mr. Frank, 69 years of
age, makes his home in Basle,
Switzerland.
