The prayer is one that was
suggested to New York State

beg Thy blessings upon us, our
parents, our teachers and our
country."
Proponents of the prayer say
it is "innocuous." George Rund-

which has been using the

Sam Offen, a Detroit furrier,
was critically injured Manday
night in a hit-run accident,
which almost accomplished what
five years of living under Nazi
domination failed to do.,
Offen, who is still on the
critical list at Mt. CarthetIEmer-
gency Hospital, underwent ma-
jor surgery after the accident,
which caused severe internal
injuries. The driver of the hit-
run car surrendered to police
on Tuesday.
Owner of Offen Furs, at 13326
Dexter, he came to Detroit in
1951 with his two brothers, Ber-
nard, who will operate his shop
until he is able to return to
work, and Nat, who lives in
New Jersey.
Although his parents and a
sister were killed by the Nazis,
Sam managed to escape and
fought in Gen. Anders Free
Polish Army. Following the war,
he was reunited with his broth-
ers and the three of them spent
five years in England - before
coming here.
Sam, who married a Detroit
girl, Hyla Lesser, first worked
here for Ceresnie Brothers Fur-
riers before opening his own
establishment. His commitments
for several fashion shows, which
already have been arranged,
will be carried on as scheduled,
his brother, Bernard, said.
Sam has two children, Jerry,
5, and Gail, 3. The family now
lives at 3282 Fullerton; however,
they are planning to move into
a new home in Oak Park in
May.

ROME—The Italian Court of
Accounts ruled Tuesday that
Italian-born . residents of Israel
are still to be considered Ita-
lian citizens, thus restoring to
such residents the right to
claim Italian old -age pensions.
The court ruled on an Israel
law granting to residents the
right to renounce Israel citizen-
ship any time before July 1952.
According to the ruling, "the
fact of not having taken ad-
vantage" of that law did not
"necessarily imply intention of
acquiring new citizenship in
Israel."
Italian-born residents there-
fore were still to be considered
Italian citizens, the court
ruled.

Supreme Court has developed
in the suburban community of
Herricks over a prayer being
recited by all 4,200 children
in the district's seven schools.
Five parents, backed by the
New York Civil Liberties
Union, have b r ought suit
against the Herricks School
Board. They -say that the
prayer which now starts each
school day constitutes a viola-
tion of the Constitutional
principle of separation of church
and state.
Members of the school board,
backed by what appears to be
a majority of the parents in
the school district, maintain
that recitation of the prayer
is in the best traditions of
Americanism.
