Jewish Portrait Adapted Well by Temple Actors Guild
Sylvia Regan's hit Broadway
play of two decades ago, "Morn-
ing Star," became the second
successful production of the
newly-formed Temple Israel Ac-
tors Guild this week.
Performed Tuesday. Wednes-
day and Thursday nights in the
temple's Leon Fram Hall, the
play, which relates the story of
a Jewish immigrant family on
New York's lower East Side,
was enthusiastically received by
audiences on each night.
It is to the group's credit that
they attempted a play with a
Jewish theme, the first we can
recall having been • done by a
community group in too long a
time.
The presentation gives ample
proof that there are fine plays
that can be adapted to perform-
ances by Jewish groups for
Jewish audiences.
Marilyn Altschuler, playing
her first dramatic role (al-
though she has performed ex-
tensively on the concert stage),
was an excellent choice for the
widowed Becky Felderman, the
wise and warm matriarch of the
family who keeps peace and
provides strength through a se-
ries of adventures and adversi-
ties.
Major supPport is given by
Lois Lipnik, Rochelle Savit and
Joanne Geer as her three daugh-
ters; Leo Mogill as the boarder
Aaron Greenspan; and Allan
Clamage and William Felsen-
feld as the two sons-in-law.
Also giving creditable ac-
counts in smaller roles were
Abe Katz as the Socialist Brown-
stein, Dr. Morris Lipnik, Elliott
Siegel, Daniel Syme, Theodore
Bahr and Sylvia Whitmeyer.
The play provides nostalgic
reminders of the early years of
the 20th century emigration
from Eastern Europe, including
the notorious Triangle Shop fire,
and continuing throughout
World War I and the depres-
sion.
Many of the sociological as-
pects of the changing attitudes
among first: second and third
generation American Jews are
still applicable today, and there
was no one in the audience who
at one time or another had not
gone through similar experi-
ences as portrayed by the excel-
lent cast of the Actors Guild,
which received fine direction
