Seminary Grants Allow Students
to Train on Teaching Scholarship
NEW YORK — Full tuition
scholarships will be available
for the academic year 1959-60
for qualified students enrolling
in the joint program of studies
conducted by the Teachers In-
stitute of the Jewish Theologi-
cal Seminary of America in
association with the School of
general studies of Columbia Uni-
versity, it was announced here.
A special grant from the Dan
Danciger Foundation makes pos-
sible five full tuition scholar-
ships of $1,500 each to be of-
fered to students preparing for
a professional career in Jewish
education or higher Jewish
studies.
Five partial scholarships of
$500 each will also be offered.
The joint program of studies
is unique in that it permits stu-
dents to receive a basic liberal
arts education while majoring
in Judaica and preparing for the
teaching profession, and is de-
vised to meet the acute shortage
of trained personnel for He-
brew schools and institutions of
higher Jewish learning through-
out the country.
Recipients of the awards will
be chosen on the basis of schol-
arship and need. Applicants for
the full scholarship must be
entering the freshman or sopho-
more class of the Teachers In-
stitute in September 1959. Up-
per classmen may apply for
partial scholarships.
Further information on schol-
arships and loans available, as
well as the academic require-
ments for admission to the pro-
gram, can be secured from the
Teachers Institute, 3080 Broad-
way, New York 27, N. Y., Office
of the Registrar.
Chicago Rabbi to Speak at Chabad Rally Sunday
Cohen in Israel
Like U.S. Smith
JERUSALEM, (JTA) —
Histadrut, the Israel Feder-
ation of Labor, found out
some of the answers to the
question: "What's in a
name?" In compiling its
countrywide voters' lists for
the federation's forthcoming
national elections, Histadrut
discovered that 22,500 of its
members . are named Cohen.
ame Levy comes
name
next with 15,000 listed.
Mizrach, meaning East, often
favored by Middle Eastern
and Levantine Jews, appears
10,000 times, as does the
East European name of
Klein. The name Schwartz
comes up 3,5000 times.
Since Histadrut's voters'
list, comprising a total of
654,000 members, is a cross-
section of the Jewish popu-
lation of the entire country,
the ratio on an Israel-wide
basis is believed to be the
same — about 3.5 percent of
the Jewish population, or a
total approximating 63,000
Cohens in Israel.
The Merkos L'Inyonei Chi-
nuch Detroit Chabad will hold
their membership rally at 7:30
p.m., Sunday, at the Oak-Woods
Young Israel.
Rabbi Harold Shusterman,
who was born in the United
States but studied in European
Yeshivot, will be guest speaker.
Rabbi Shusterman, of Chicago,
is a graduate of the Lubavitcher
Yeshiva in Brooklyn. A message
from the Lubavitcher Rebbe,
Rabbi Menachem M. Scheerson,
will be read at the gathering.
More than 200 members have
been recruited in the current
drive for 500 new enrollees. For
further information on the rally
or membership, call TO 9-7928,
or TO 6-4474.

Catholics, Jews Protest
Italian Bible Comic Strip
ROME (JTA) — The Roman
Catholic archdiocese in Milan
has withdrawn the ecclesiastical
license previously granted to
a publishing firm there which
was issuing a serialized version
of the Bible in comic-strip form.
Announcement that the per-
mit has been revoked was made
in the Vatican's official news-
paper, L'Osservatore Romano.
Jewish organizations had com-
plained against the comic-strip
serialization as "vulgarizaton
and profanation" of sacred
Scripture.
