Recluse Junk Dealer Leaves $250,000 Estate to Yeshiva University A 74-year-old Hatboro, Pa., junk dealer has bequeathed his entire estate of more than $250,000 to Yeshiva University, it was announced by University president Dr. Samuel Belkin. Charles Fraiman, who died Feb. 10, in Philadelphia, named Yeshiva University as sole ben- eficiary of the fortune he had acclumulated through 50 years in the junk and scrap metal business. Fraiman - .Lived in poverty in a junk-cluttered house during his lifetime, despite his wealth. He allowed himself luxuries only in reading matter. He was self-taught in reading and was a heavy subscriber to magazines and read many books, especially the Bible. He was also a con- tributor to many charitable causes, always in the strictest anonymity. Yeshiva University is estab- lishing a memorial to Fraiman at its Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminar y, the nation's oldest and largest training center for traditional rabbis. Fraiman had visited the University some 20 years ago and was impressed with its scholarship. Report Russian Fetes 'or Sholem Aleichem PITTSBURGH (JTA) - A pilot series of conversational Hebrew lessons, sponsored by the Hebrew Institute of Pitts- burgh and the Pittsburgh Zion- ist district, will begin Monday on WQED, the local educa- tional television station. The experimental series will include phases of culture asso- ciated with the language, using motion pictures in Hebrew, demonstrations of Hebrew cul- tural activities in the United States and in Israel. Biblical readings and topical discussions -all in Hebrew. If public response is favor- able, the Hebrew lessons will be resumed in the fall on a twice-a-week basis. Sam Silverman of the WQED staff, is production director. Hebrew U. Students Strike Over Tuition Fee Direct JTA Teletype Wire To The Jewish News JERUSALEM - Students at the Hebrew University staged a strike and street demonstra- tion in protest against an in- crease in tuition fees recom- mended by a special inquiry committee. The increase was from 260 to 400 pounds a year as recom- mended by the committee which had been headed by Supreme Court Justice Simon Agranat. The increase had been ap- proved by the Ministry of Ed- ucation, which noted that the higher fee was still less than that paid in many senior classes of high schools. Both press and public were reported critical of the student action. Hebrew Corner LONDON (WJA)-The cen- Automobile Festival tenary of the birth of Sholem Aleichem was pr ominently featured in Bir obij a n, the World Jewish Congress infor- mation department learned from a Moscow broadcast. "A big book exhibition illus- trating the author's life and works opened in the library bearing his name, and the ex- hibits included the novels "Er- ratic Stars," "Tobias the Milk- man," "On the Way from the Fair" and collections of short stories," the broadcast said. The newspapers Birobijans- kaya Zvezda and Birobidjaner Shtern are reported to have carried special articles, and "talks, lectures and readers' conferences were arranged at many enterprises and collec- tive farms." Reports on a "soiree devoted to the centenary . . . in the Hall of Columns in Moscow" and to a similar event in Kiev, capital of the . Ukraine, were referred to in other Moscow transmissions in the first week of March. A commemorative program was transmitted in a `Literary Broadcast' of Mos- cow's home service. Nazi Aide; Was Puppet Ruler in Slovakia NEW YORK, (JTA) -Pro- tests mounted against the admit- tance to the Untied States of a former foreign minister of the Nazi puppet regime in Slovakia during World War II. Cong. Emanuel Celler, chair- man of the House Judiciary Committee, said he was trying to find out how Ferdinand Dur- cansky, charged with being a war criminal and Nazi collabo- rator, had managed to enter the United States. Rep. Celler, speaking at a meeting of the American Jew- ish Congress, said he had been advised that the Immigration and Naturalization Service had no record of Durcansky's arrival here. While Celler was addressing the Congress group, Durcansky was being .honored at a lunch- eon at the Waldorf-Astoria yes- terday by the Slovak League of America. A protest against Dur- cansky's admittance to the U.S. had been made by the Council of Free Czechoslovakia, which charged that the Department of State had given assurances Dur- cansky would never be allowed to enter the United States. Rep. Celler cited proceedings of the Nuremberg war crimes trials, in which Durcansky was accused of having worked close- ly with the Nazis, resulting in the deportation of 68,000 Slovak Jews to Nazi concentration camps. Rep. Celler said the rec- ord indicated Durcansky, who served as Foreign Minister of the Slovak puppet regime, had escaped trial by fleeing to AP- gentina after the war.
