A Statement and a Challenge by
the Members of the Food Division
1959 Allied Jewish Campaign

The Officers, Directors and Members of the Food Division believe this is a year of
exceptional need both for our co-religionists overseas and for those in our city and nation
who must have our help. We are going to raise more money in 1959 than ever before and
challenge all other Allied Jewish Campaign divisions to do the same.
We think we are going to win the Detroit Service Group cup for the best division in the
Campaign, but invite competition.

Allied Jewish Campaign Food Division
Holds Biggest, Best, Gathering Ever

•

The Food Division of the 1959 Allied Jewish Campaign held

the biggest meeting in its history last week. More than 150
division members heard an inspiring talk by Rabbi Morris Adler
of Congregation Shaarey Zedek and then pledged their increased
support to the Campaign and the causes at home and abroad

it serves.

Division chairman Max M. Shaye reports that $488,000

was raised at the meeting, $90,000 more than last year.

Al and Tom Borman, speaking for Food Fair Markets and its
executive staff, sparked the Food Dinner with their pledge of

$82,500.

"We do not know what intricacies of international politics
caused the Romanian government to issue exit visas to Jews," the Rabbi said,
"we only know that these are our people and we must provide them with the

funds that will bring them to Israel."

Rabbi Adler asked his audience to pretend it was 1947 and that Jews
were leaving Romania. "What would happen to them?" the Rabbi asked.
"Would we again have shiploads of refugees with nowhere in the entire
world to land? It is only the miracle that is Israel that gives us an oppor-
tunity to help our fellow Jews. How could we continue to live with ourselves

if we • by-passed that opportunity?" Rabbi Adler asked.

Guests of the Division at the Dinner Meeting included Campaign
co-chairman, Leonard N. Simons and United Jewish Appeal honorary na-
tional chairman, Joseph Holtzman. Pre-campaign chairman, Paul Zucker-

man, :a division member, helped with the card calling.
