THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS—Friday, March 20, 1959- 14 L The Suburban Community Jewish War Veterans Lead Battle Against Hamanism By the Oak-Woodser The month of March has been proclaimed as membership month by the Department of Michigan of the Jewish War Veterans. And what better time to ex- plain its purpose could have been chosen than the week of Purim? Because, in addition to being a group concerned solely with veterans activities, JWV has been a constant battler against all the Hamans and would-be Hamans in this coun- try and throughout the world. It is rather interesting that the Jewish War Veterans started after the Civil War to nullify stories that were being circulated at the time that the Jews did not serve in the armed forces of the United States. The organization has gained momentum through the years. It continues today as one of the oldest existent veterans groups in the country, and numbers among its members Jewish soldier s from the Spanish ;American War, the two World Wars and Korea. Locally, the Jewish Veterans has an outstanding record of assistance to servicemen who are now patients in the state's veterans hospitals. Rarely a week goes by that one of the local posts and auxil- iaries does not have a hOspital party, at which they bring enter- tainment, food, books and other necessity and luxury 'items to the hundreds of veterans who are still hospitalized. More than with veterans activ- ities a 1 o n e, however, JWV is concerned with the perpetua- tion of democratic concepts— the theory b e i n g, of course, that "we have fought to keep - our country s t r o n g through war; we must continue the bat- tle against every undemocratic pr ocedure even in time of peace." Thus, it was not surprising that JWV, was in the fore- front of those organizations who worked to gain informa- tion about the bombers of the temnle in Atlanta, Ga. With local Jewish leaders, JWV loaned its resources and posted a $5,000 reward for in- formation leading to arrest of the criminals. Jewish News Classified Ads VE. 8-9364. Get Results.
