Theological Seminary's Beth Din Creates Marriage Counselling Service
NEW YORK — A new co-
operative understanding be-
tween rabbinical scholars and
practicing psychiatrists has led
to the establishment of a mar-
riage counselling service under
the auspices of the Beth Din
(Jewish court) of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of Am-
erica and the Rabbinical As-
sembly of America, it was
announced by Dr. Louis Finkel-
stein, Seminary Chancellor, Dr.
Isaac Klein, president of the
Rabbinical Assembly and rabbi
of Temple Emanuel, Buffalo,
N.Y., and Dr. Mortimer Ostow,
psychiatrist, who heads the de-
partment of pastoral psychiatry
at the Seminary in New York.
"The new marriage counsel-
ling service," according to Dr.
Finkelstein, "will use the com-
bined skills of the rabbinic
scholar and the psychiatrist of
resolve marital conflicts. This

Ben Shiffman
Michigan's only living Jewish
Spanish-American War veteran

He is Ben Shiffman, who re-
mains one of JWV's most active
workers. The dinner will take
place on March 28, at Beth
Abraham Synagogue, where Mr.
and Mrs. Shiffman are mem-
bers.
Coming here to pay tribute to
Shiffman will be Sam Shaike-
witz, national commander of

of the fifth region from Youngs-
town, 0.; Mrs. Bertha Samuels,
past national JWVA president
from Cleveland.

service, under the auspices of
the Beth Din, will protect the
Divine element which exists in
every true marriage."
Heralding the new service,
Dr. Klein asserted that many
rabbis in the community today
are spending from one third to
one half of their time giving
advice on personal problems to
individual members of their
congregations.
In outlining the development
of the new project, Dr. Finkel-
stein praised the efforts of Dr.
Klein, a member of the Beth
Din since its inception, in ob-
taining acceptance of the new
Ketubah, or marriage contract
adopted in 1954.
This . change in the tradi-
tional marriage agreement re-
quires both bride and groom
to acknowledge the authority
of the Beth Din or its repre-
sentative to counsel them in
the light of Jewish tradition.
Dr. Finkelstein characterized
it as the first step in making
possible the new marriage
counselling service.
Dr. Finkelstein explain e d
that the counselling service
which is being launched at the
Seminary is to be regarded as
a pilot project.
Proof of the potential effec-
tiveness of this approach to
marital problems lies in the
achievements made in two
years of experimentation, ac-
cording to Dr. Finkelstein.
When experimentation started,
he asserted, "there was a back-
ground of 22 purportedly in-
soluble cases in which a civil
divorce had already been
granted, but in which it was
apparently impossible to secure
a get or Jewish divorce. Today,
thanks to the efforts of Rabbi
Aaron Kirschenbaum and Rabbi
Arthur Chiel who have been
in charge of this aspect of the
work, there are no such cases.
Further, innumerable couples
have been convinced to give
marriage a further try, either
because they have been per-
suaded that they have not
fulfilled the obligations which
each assumed when the mar-
riage was contracted, or be-
cause one party or both have
agreed to enter into therapy
to help them resolve the per-
sonal problems which are
jeopardizing their home."
